A Torch is a Furniture item that produces light when placed, held, or dropped, and is crucial at all stages of gameplay as a primary light source. Torches provide light permanently, and are never consumed.

Torches can be placed on the sides or tops of most Blocks, and on the sides of Trees and Wooden Beams. They cannot be placed on Wood Platforms. A placed Torch can be retrieved by right-clicking on it, freeing it with a Hammer, or breaking all surrounding blocks.

Torches can be Wired as Mechanisms, which allows them to be toggled off and on.

Standard Torch

Standard Torches are crafted By Hand from Wood and Gel, produce an orange flame, and will not function under Water or Lava. Standard Torches are also purchasable from the Merchant for 50 each.

Other types

Colored Torches

Colored Torches are crafted by combining standard Torches with Gems, each producing the corresponding color of light. There are six available colors, one for each of the six Gem colors. With the exception of their colors and light levels, these function identically to a standard Torch.

Cursed Torch

In Hardmode, Cursed Torches function identically to other types, except that they function under Water and Lava. They are crafted from standard Torches and Cursed Flames.

Demon Torch

Demon Torches can only be found naturally-placed in the Underworld's Ruined Houses, where they occur rather frequently, and cannot be crafted. They function identically to standard and colored Torches, except that they cycle smoothly between red, purple, and blue flame/light colors.

Notes

• With the exception of the Cursed Torch, Torches do not function under Water. A Torch thrown into Water will not emit light once it submerges, and if a player enters Water with a Torch selected in the Hotbar, the Torch will not be visible and will emit no light. Placed Torches are freed when Water touches them, and drop as items.
• Holding the Auto-Select key (default: Left Shift) with the cursor over empty space will automatically prepare the torches in your inventory, allowing for quick placement or easy access to light.
• Demon Torches cycle smoothly between red, purple, and blue light.
• White Torches appear to produce the most light of any light source in the game.
• Cursed Torches function under both Water and Lava.
• Torches provide more light when placed than they do when held or dropped.

Bug: If the server command to settle liquids is used all cursed torches in water will act like they are normal torches under water and break off of the surface they're attached to.
