Chests are storage items that hold up to 40 item stacks in rows of 10x4. They can only be freed and picked up when empty. You can only mine a chest when it's empty using a Pickaxe. It is impossible to destroy the blocks underneath the chest while it still has items in it.

In addition to being craftable, Chests also occur naturally in random map locations and contain various loot.

There are 19 varieties of natural Chests (14 of which cannot be crafted) and 26 craftable ones (plus a Barrel and a Trash Can), for a total of 40 Chest types and 42 placed storage items overall (besides Dressers, Safes and Piggy Banks).

There is a maximum limit of 1000 storage items (excluding portable and showcase storage items) in each world. Attempts to place additional storage items will result in the item immediately dropping to the ground as an item rather than being placed.

Placed chests can be renamed (Maximum of 20 characters). Hovering the mouse cursor over a renamed chest will show its name, if the chest hasn't been renamed, no name will be displayed. To rename the chest, first open the chest with  Interact. The default chest name reflects the type of chest (e.g. a Living Wood chest has the default chest name "Living Wood Chest"). Select "Rename", and a keyboard interface will be displayed, allowing you to either use your keyboard to type in a new name, or click the letters on the keyboard interface. Press ↵ Enter or Click "Save" when finished.

Template:Pc icon Chests can be crafted into Trapped Chests, which are not storage items, but instead send a signal when opened.

Notes

  • Before opening a chest outside of a dungeon in a hardmode world, it would be advisable to shoot it with a ranged weapon or summon a minion, because the chest might really be a mimic. If it is, it will take damage and start chasing the player.

Craftable Chests

  • All crafted Chests can be sold for 1, except: The Dynasty Chest, Steampunk Chest and Honey Chest, which all sell for 5; and the Glass Chest, which sells for 60.

Surface loot

Ordinary Chests that occur naturally on the Surface contain various loot that the player can take and place in their own inventory. Each chest contains a single "rare item" and an assortment of randomly chosen common items.
