The Magic Missile is a magic weapon that can be found in the Dungeon's locked Gold Chests. It can also be found in Golden Lock Boxes found in Dungeon and Stockade Crates which are fished up in the Dungeon. It fires an exploding projectile that can be controlled by holding the ⚒ Use / Attack button and moving the cursor. If the ⚒ Use / Attack button is released mid-drag, the missile will be flung in that direction. If the cursor is stationary on release, it flies directly away from the player. The projectile also emits a moderate amount of light.
If any enemies are nearby when the missile is released, the missile will home in and attack them.
Its best modifier is Mythical.

Notes[]
- The mana cost is for the initial casting only. Maintaining and directing the missile does not cost additional mana, and the player will regenerate mana while controlling it.
- The Magic Missile can fire through water (unlike the Flamelash, a similar guidable weapon).
- The projectiles of the Magic Missile can be controlled through gaps of one tile wide.
Tips[]
- The missile emits light and can be remotely directed wherever there is continuous empty space, making it a good cave-scouting tool.
- The projectile causes an explosion that can damage enemies through a one-block thick wall.
- The Magic Missile can prove very useful when combined with the Binoculars, increasing the range in which the missile can be guided.
- The missile has a high amount of knockback while being as accurate as the player can move their mouse, allowing to knock enemies away with precision.
Trivia[]
- The Flamelash, which is found in Shadow Chests and Obsidian Lock Boxes
, can be considered an Underworld-tier upgrade to the Magic Missile, having identical functionality but inflicting increased damage and the On Fire! debuff. The Rainbow Rod, crafted in early Hardmode, also has identical functionality and deals even further damage. - A magic missile spell first appeared in the fantasy tabletop role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons in 1974, and has appeared in countless publications since.
- In Dungeons & Dragons, the magic missile spell always hits its target, represented in Terraria by the item's homing ability.
- Previously, on the Mobile version, the missile could be fired multiple times, stacking into something that could instantly kill most enemies.
