A Modifier applies changes to an item's statistics (for instance, adding damage to a Weapon). All Weapons and Accessories have Modifiers applied at random when they are crafted, bought from an NPC, spawn in Chests, or are picked up from drops; though one possible Modifier is no Modifier at all, which has an equal chance of being applied.

A Modifier changes the name of an item by adding a prefix, such as "Adept", "Godly", or "Broken" (eg. "Broken Iron Hammer"). A complete list of all 112 of these appears below. Hovering the cursor over an item with a Modifier in an Inventory slot will show the modification details beneath the item's description.

An item's Modifier can be switched via the Goblin Tinkerer's Reforge function. Reforging allows the player to trade an item's current buy value in coins for a new random Modifier.

  • Accessory modifiers will grant a bonus to one of the player's stats, such as defense, movement speed, or maximum Mana. It is applied as long as the accessory is equipped.
  • Weapon modifiers alter the statistics of that particular weapon, and may be positive or negative, with up to 5 positive or 3 negative effects at once. Tools that act as Weapons, such as Pickaxes and Hammers, may also have these Modifiers.

Reforging

Reforging is a service provided by the Goblin Tinkerer to switch an item's Modifier, or add a Modifier to an unmodified item. Reforging will apply a new, random Modifier to an item, replacing any existing Modifier. Crafting a new identical item will have the same effect, though may require crafting materials not in the player's possession; whereas Reforging only requires Coins. Though some reforges may be a downgrade.

The Goblin Tinkerer charges half of the item's current buy value, which is two and a half times its sell value. Existing modifiers affect this value, so items with poor existing modifiers are cheaper to reforge, while reforging an already well-modified item will be more expensive. However, the Discount Card can be used to lower reforge costs by 20%.

Notes

  • Modifiers can raise or lower the rarity of an item by up to 2 tiers. It can also raise its value by up to 210%, or lower it by up to 69% (current maximums).
  • The percentages displayed via in-game tooltips may vary depending on the item's base values, since those percentages are determined after rounding. For example, the Murderous prefix on a Handgun will display a 7% damage increase, while on a Magic Missile it will display a 9% increase.
  • An item's existing modifiers will not have any effect when the item is used as a material in the crafting of another item. For example, an Enchanted Boomerang's modifiers are lost when used to create a Flamarang, which will get a new, completely random modifier upon creation.

Accessory modifiers are active when equipped. Every accessory item can be reforged with the exception of the Guide Voodoo Doll, Clothier Voodoo Doll, and all the Music Boxes. Accessories can have one of the following modifiers attached to them:

Weapon Modifiers

These modifiers only apply when the weapon is being used. Weapons that have no Knockback cannot be reforged with modifiers that change Knockback, such as Drills, Magical Harp and many other guns (such as the minishark).

The Light Disc cannot have modifiers.

Universal

Flails, Spears, Boomerangs (except for the Light Disc), Chainsaws, Drills and Jackhammers (including the Drax) can only have universal prefixes, because they can't have their speed modified.

Universal modifiers can also be found on all other weapon types. The best universal prefix is Godly.

The best prefix for a Drill is Demonic (as they have no knockback), except for the Drax, whose best prefix is Godly (since it has knockback).

Melee

All Pickaxes, Hammers, Axes, Hamaxes and swung Melee Weapons can be reforged with these mods, in addition to the top two categories. (Due to their low base damage, the Wooden Hammer and Copper Axe cannot be affected by modifiers that change their damage by 15% or less.) The best melee prefix is Legendary. Note that since the patch 1.1.1 it's no longer possible for a Spear to have any prefix that increases size. This includes Legendary, so the best prefix possible for a spear is Godly.

Ranged

All Bows and Guns (Excluding the Space Gun and Laser Rifle which count as magic Weapons) can be reforged with one of the following mods, in addition to the top two categories. The best ranged prefix is Unreal. However, the Minishark, Star Cannon, the Flintlock Pistol, and the Clockwork Assault Rifle, while also in this category, are unable to receive any modifiers that affect knockback, as they have none. The best prefix for a ranged weapon without knockback is Demonic.

Due to various limitations with certain Weapon classes, determining the best-possible Modifiers may not be as simple as comparing statistics, and players can waste money trying to acquire Modifiers that are impossible to achieve for their given Weapon.
