— The Merchant

Torches can be picked from the wall by pressing the Open / Activate key and used to light up the region around the player.
Torches held by the player will be put out upon entering water, even if the water is waist level and would not reach it.

Torches are furniture items that produce light when placed, held, or dropped (via the Throw key), and are crucial at all stages of gameplay as primary light sources. Torches provide light permanently, and are never consumed. Regular torches can be found randomly in chests and Pots, as a bonus dropDesktop, Console, and Mobile Versions from slimes, or purchased from the Merchant or Skeleton MerchantDesktop, Console, and Mobile Versions for 50*50 each.

Torches can be placed on the sides or tops of most blocks, on background walls, and on the sides of trees and Wooden Beams. In the Desktop version Desktop version they can be placed on any type of platform. A placed torch can be retrieved by pressing the Open / Activate key on it or by freeing it with a pickaxe or drill. When the block a torch is attached to is broken, the torch will attach itself to any other block or wall directly adjacent to it. If all adjacent blocks surrounding a torch are removed (left, right, and bottom), and no wall exists behind it, it drops like any other item.

Torches are also mechanisms that can be toggled on and off via Wire.

Placing at least 100 torches in close proximity, at a depth of at least 200 below surface level in any biome, will start the Torch God mini-event.

Luck[edit | edit source]

Desktop version Desktop-Only Content: This information applies only to the Desktop version of Terraria.

This content is transcluded from Luck/Torch Luck.(Maximum: +0.2 / Minimum: 0)

By placing or holding Torches in the correct locations, players can increase their luck:

  • Placed torches in the Surface or Space layers are ignored. That is, above 0 feet height/Level Surface, only player held torches will affect luck.
  • Torch luck does not apply in the Dungeon or Jungle Temple.
  • In the Underground and below, each type of torch present in a 40 tile square radius around the player (and also any torch they are holding) will increase or reduce torch luck, with the total value limited to a maximum of 0.2 and a minimum of 0.
  • With some exceptions, biome torches give good luck in their own biome, while giving a luck penalty in any other location.
  • Ordinary torches give a penalty anywhere that a biome torch would be available, and especially the Snow Biome. Bone torches give a bonus in biomes without their own biome torch (and also the Ocean).
  • Colored and Ultrabright Torches, along with other light sources such as candles, have no effect.
  • The good luck, and luck penalty, are independently limited to a maximum of 0.2 for good luck and 0.3 for the luck penalties. Thus, multiple torches of a given type will have no increased benefit, and one or more incorrect torches will completely negate the benefits of torch luck.
  • No matter what penalties accumulate, torch luck overall cannot go below 0 -- it can either provide a bonus to luck, or nothing at all.

TorchTorch None 0 0, 0.1 or 0.3 (see notes)

Notes:[edit | edit source]

  • Coral torches reduce torch luck by 0.2 only when placed outside water and when outside the Ocean biomes. They increase luck in the Ocean biome whether or not they are in water.
  • Regular torches reduce torch luck by 0.1 in the Desert, Corruption, Crimson and Hallow biomes and by 0.3 in the Snow biome. No effects in other locations.

To maximize luck, players should try to use biome torches underground in their respective biomes, and avoid using the torches for the wrong biome. They should also avoid using ordinary torches in any biome which has its own torch. Bone Torches will provide some benefit in biomes without their own torch (Forest, Glowing Mushroom, Space, Underworld, "plain" Caverns) and also the Ocean. Above the "level surface", players can boost their luck by holding the proper torch; clearly this will not help with fishing, or anything else that requires a non-torch tool. Combat can still be affected defensively, and by way of indirect attacks: Minions, sentries, armor effects.

If Torch God's Favor is toggled on, "regular" torches are automatically converted to the proper type when held and/or placed in the Hallow, Corruption, Crimson, Jungle, Desert and Snow biomes. Bone Torches and Demon torches can also be automatically placed in the Dungeon or Underworld respectively, but those still have no effect on luck there. (Bone Torches would give a bonus in the Underworld.)

Notes[edit | edit source]

  • With the exception of the Coral Torch, Cursed Torch and Ichor Torch, torches do not function under water. A torch thrown into water will not emit light once it submerges, and if a player enters water with a torch selected in the hotbar, the torch will not be visible and will emit no light. Placed torches are freed when water touches them, and drop as items.
  • Holding the Auto Select key with the cursor over empty space will automatically prepare the torches in the player's inventory, allowing for quick placement or easy access to light.
  • White Torches appear to produce the most light of any light source in the game.
  • Torches provide more light when placed than they do when held or dropped, with the exception of the Ultrabright.
  • Torches are the only item where it is possible to throw (via the Throw key) just one of the item. For all other items the entire stack gets thrown.
  • Throwing a torch will cause it to only go a few tiles forwards before falling straight down. For a light source that can be tossed farther, Glowsticks or Flares should be used (though note that Glowsticks are thrown by selecting them and then pressing the Use / Attack button, not by pressing Throw).
  • Despite appearing dim, Blue Torches can reach a respectable distance with the "Trippy" lighting mode selected, which is extended even farther under the effects of a Night Owl Potion.
  • While in Smart Cursor mode, the player can only place torches in dark places.
  • Rainbow torches are the hardest to obtain.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Orange Torches were apparently added because of a "really persistent nagging brit" in reference to the YouTuber ChippyGaming AKA James Bennett.[4]
  • Torch flame animations continue to play while the game is paused.
  • If a block is placed above a torch, the torch will lower. If there is no block above it, the torch gets higher. This can be seen best using a Trap Door and opening/closing it.
