Wings are Hardmode accessories that allow the player to fly temporarily by pressing and holding the Jump key. Flight time is reset when the player rests on solid objects, including both standing on blocks and using climbing items like Ropes, Hooks, Shoe Spikes, and Climbing Claws. Certain Wing types also allow the player to hover at fixed heights by holding the ▼ Down key during flight, and/or accelerate their ascent speed by holding the ▲ Up key.

After flight time has been exhausted, a player can continue holding the Jump key to glide. Gliding fall speed can be accelerated by holding the ▼ Down key in addition.

Wings additionally grant immunity from fall damage (except when overridden by the Stoned debuff), rendering fall damage protection items like the Lucky Horseshoe unnecessary.

Flight is much more controlled with Wings than with Rocket Boots, Spectre Boots, etc. alone, and they allow for much greater flight range. Equipping Wings generally replaces jumps entirely with flight, rather than requiring a double-jump to activate. However, with double-jump accessories like the Cloud in a Bottle equipped, the player will have to use their double-jump before being able to fly.

There are currently 44 wing types in total: 43 are available on Desktop version Desktop, 39 on Console version Console, 36 on Mobile version Mobile, and 21 on Old-gen console version Old-gen console and 3DS version3DS. Flight time and speed can vary by type.

Types[edit | edit source]

For the flight heights achievable with wings stacked with other equipment, see Jump Height Comparison.

Most craftable wings are crafted at a Mythril Anvil or an Orichalcum Anvil. The four Lunar wings (Solar Wings, Vortex Booster, Nebula Mantle, and Stardust Wings) are instead crafted at the Ancient Manipulator.

All developer wings have a 1/20 (5%) chance to drop from Expert mode Treasure Bags from Hardmode bosses.

    • As of 1.4, the Jetpack is much more powerful, surpassing Frozen Wings.
    • Even when dyed, the Jetpack's particle effect will give off orange light, although the thrust flames will change color according to the dye.
    • Some jump-boosting accessories stack with wings to boost flight (see chart to the right).
    • All wings work in water.
    • The Fishron Wings work in water just as they do on land, with the same speed, unlike other wings.
    • Ghost Wings and Spectre Wings will only change color with the use of Black Dye which will make them appear a sort of dark gray.
    • The player cannot equip more than one wing at a time.
    • When one wing type is placed in a social slot and the other in an accessory slot, the full animation of the vanity wings are shown, along with any lighting and particle effects. Flight speed and other functional characteristics follow those in the accessory slot.
    • Wings can be hidden when equipped and will be hidden while not in the air, otherwise they are always visible (except when using other equipment that adds graphics to the player's back, like the Leaf Blower or Turtle Scale Mail). They fold into a low-profile image when not used.
    • Some mounts also grant flight ability, some with infinite flight time (all wings provide only temporary flight).

The paths produced by jumping with a Sandstorm in a Balloon with the player not wearing wings at all (left) and the player wearing wings on vanity (right). Notice the difference in the angles when the player ascends.
The player is jumping from the sand into the water.
    • The horizontal speed, distance and height of any midair jumps (such as the Cloud in a Balloon) are greatly decreased when the player wears wings alongside them.
    • If Red's Wings are obtained on the Xbox 360 Xbox 360 version, PS3 version, or Wii Wii U version, they will not disappear and can be used without any problems. Other developer wings are available through hacking too, but they do not possess infinite flight. If wearing any other wings, besides the Jetpack as vanity over Red's Wings, the fast ascent becomes unavailable.

    Tips[edit | edit source]

    • If the Jetpack is worn in vanity any other wings can use the fast ascent. This no longer works in
    • Flight time can be reset in midair by using a hook to hit a block then release immediately after, and continue to hold the Jump key. Alternatively, an Ice Rod can be used to lay blocks of ice to land in midair, making it possible to remain in the air indefinitely.
    • The slow-fall effect of Featherfall Potion or an Umbrella will stack with wing glide, allowing for very long glides after flight time has been exhausted.
    • By using the Bundle of Balloons, Frog Leg, Solar Wings, Frostspark Boots, Flying Carpet, and Featherfall Potion, the player can attain a total maximum of about 1400 tiles of flight distance. More can be achieved by using the Umbrella.
    • Using the Soaring Insignia will also grant infinite flight time, regardless of the type of wing used.
    • Some wings are particularly easy to acquire early on in Hardmode:
      • Leaf Wings require nothing more than putting the Witch Doctor in a Jungle biome and paying 750000*75 Gold Coin.png at night.
      • Harpy Wings require a bit of luck when farming Harpies. Fortunately, Wyverns spawn at the same altitude, so when a Giant Harpy Feather drops, the odds are good that 20 Souls of Flight will already have been collected. The Giant Harpy Feather can also be collected before activating Hardmode.
      • Angel and Demon Wings require 25 of either Souls of Light or Souls of Night. The souls can easily be acquired by staying long enough in Underground Hallow or Underground Corruption/Underground Crimson, since all enemies killed have a chance to drop the respective biome's soul.
      • Fairy Wings require farming the surface Hallow for Pixie Dust. It takes a lot of farming to get the 100 units needed, but the enemies are relatively easy to deal with in early Hardmode.
      • Frozen and Flame Wings are the best wings for all of pre-Golem (apart from the Fishron Wings). Frozen Wings are the easier of the two to obtain; they only require a blizzard and a Snow biome in which to farm Ice Golems. Souls of Flight still must be collected.
      • The best order to obtain wings, excluding any "useless" wings, is the following: Leaf, Frozen/Flame, Steampunk (optional), Fishron, then Solar/Stardust (or the Celestial Starboard, if the player is in expert or above).

    Trivia[edit | edit source]

Mothron wings with dye can make them look like Butterfly wings.
Dye can make some wings look like other wings. For an example, Mothron Wings with dye looks like Butterfly Wings.
    • Dyeing Red's Wings in combination with Hermes Boots or any of its upgrades will change the color of the smoke below the player.
    • Prior to VersionConsole VersionMobile Version, Red's Wings would allow the wearer to fly infinitely and faster than any other wings if the player managed to obtain them through inventory editors.
    • There are 4 wings that are bought from NPCs, but only 3 in any version: The Steampunk Wings (Desktop VersionConsole VersionMobile Version), Sparkly Wings (Old-gen console version3DS Version), Jetpack, and Leaf Wings.
    • Fledgling Wings are the only wings that are obtainable prior to hardmode.
    • Ghostar's Infinity Eight is very likely a reference to the .Hack// franchise, specifically the .Hack//G.U. games, as their name is a reference to the Infinity Eight in that game, as well as sharing an appearance with the sword-wings of the Avatar Skeith in it's Xth form. This is compounded by its flavor text: "I am right here." which is a phrase repeatedly used throughout the .Hack//G.U. games.
    • The Fairy Wings are one of the only items that require 2 slots of the same item to craft (In this case pixie dust).
