Template:Infobox Wrapper The Eater of Worlds is a Boss monster summoned by using Worm Food in The Corruption as well as being summoned each time you break 3 Shadow Orbs. Trying to summon one with Worm Food while another is still alive will result in instant death.

Quick Answers

Can the Eater of Worlds be summoned without destroying Shadow Orbs, and if so, how? toggle section

Why does the Eater of Worlds' segmented form, instead of a single target, matter? toggle section
The Eater of Worlds, a boss character in Terraria, is unique in that it's not a single target but a string of segments, each with its own life counter. This design significantly impacts the strategy for fighting it. When any inner body segment is destroyed, it splits into multiple smaller worms, each with their own head and tail. This means that to defeat the Eater of Worlds, every section must be killed. This can make the battle more challenging, as players must focus on multiple targets at once. Additionally, when the Eater of Worlds splits, the segment that becomes the tail fully recovers, adding another layer of complexity to the fight.

What additional abilities does the Eater of Worlds gain in Expert and Master mode? toggle section
In Expert and Master mode, the Eater of Worlds gains several additional abilities. It becomes about 20% faster and periodically shoots Vile Spit projectiles from all body parts. These projectiles have a chance to inflict the Weak debuff onto the player. When fought above the ground, the Eater of Worlds moves quicker and constantly fires Vile Spit at the player. Additionally, every time it splits, it summons an Eater of Souls. Its maximum speed is also increased significantly.

Boss Description

Making a Wood Platform for fighting the boss makes things a lot easier, but it can still be a hectic fight.

Like all Worms, the Eater of Worlds is not a single target; Each body section is an individual entity. Unlike other worms, however, the Eater of Worlds will split into multiple smaller worms when a body segment is defeated. To defeat the Eater of Worlds, you must completely destroy each and every section of the Worm, until there is nothing left.

Each individual worm is composed of at least 2 entities: a Head, a Tail, or more Body sections. Splitting the Eater of Worlds into parts of less than 2 sections will instantly destroy the stray parts.

Each section of the Eater of Worlds is not equivalent: The Head of the Worm will deal significantly more damage than the Body and Tail. Direct contact with Heads should be avoided at all cost (Even if you can't fully avoid a Worm, a Body contact is better than a Head contact). The Head of the Eater of Worlds has significantly less Health than the body; This can be exploited when trying to hunt down the last small Worm. Destroying a Head section will cause the Eater of Worlds to stop his forward momentum and begin tunneling into the earth again.

If taken too long, or if the player dies too many times Eater of Worlds will disappear.

Notes

  • If you Save & Quit and reload your game, the Eater of Worlds will be gone.
  • If you die and are too far from the Eater of Worlds, it is possible you will get the message "Eater of Worlds has been defeated".
  • Eater of Worlds uses the same tunneling physics as the other worms. If you fight on a platform, it is recommended you provide ground (either solid or in the form of several layers) to allow the Eater of Worlds to tunnel up to you. Although its tunneling range is impressive.

History

  • In update 1.0.3, a bug caused the Eater of Worlds to spawn any time you simply selected the worm food in your inventory.
  • In update 1.0.4, the Eater of Worlds was updated to have slightly more Health and Defense and deal more damage than it had previously.
  • In update 1.0.5, the buffs from 1.0.4 were partially reverted. The Head, Tail, and Body sections all lost Health and Attack Power, but not to pre-1.0.4 levels. The guaranteed Shadow Armor piece drop has been removed, as well, making his Shadow Scale and Demonite Ore drops far more valuable. The ability to fight him anywhere (e.g. leading him back to your spawn point) seems to have been removed as well. He can only be fought in the corruption now. If a magic mirror is used, he won't follow you, and if you go back to him, you will get an instant "Eater of Worlds has been defeated!" message with no loot.
