The Extractinator (or Silt Extractinator on the minimap[1]) is an item that converts Silt, Slush, and Desert Fossils into more valuable items such as ores, coins, and gems. On the PC version PC, Console version Console, Mobile version Mobile, and tModLoader version tModLoader, it can also convert Glowing Mosses into regular mosses, and fishing junk into low level bait.

It can be found rarely in Wooden Crates, or in Gold Chests, Frozen Chests, and other chests in the Underground and Caverns layers. Underground Cabins in the Underground Desert also have a chance to contain an Extractinator.

To use the Extractinator, it first needs to be placed in the world. Afterward, suitable blocks need to be consumed (with the Use / Attack key) directly on the Extractinator within its 3×3 frame. Holding the Auto Select key and clicking on the Extractinator will automatically insert extractable items from the player's inventory without having to pick them up manually.

Feeding blocks to the Extractinator is the only way to obtain Amber Mosquitoes, and, along with opening crates, the only reliable way to obtain a world's alternative pre-Hardmode ores. This is a great way to obtain ore and coins in the early game.

Notes[]

  • Despite increasing block placement speed, neither the Builder Potion, Brick Layer, Architect Gizmo Pack nor Hand of Creation cause blocks to be processed more quickly. The speed depends solely on the block's use time.[2]
  • The world-generated ores appear with equal chances as their alternatives, e.g., the Extractinator produces an equal chance of Gold Ore and Platinum Ore, regardless of which is found underground in that world.
  • Unlike crates, the Extractinator will not provide Hardmode ores even if the world is in Hardmode. It will not produce high-tier pre-Hardmode ores such as Demonite, either.

Tips[]

  • If processing a large quantity of blocks, it may be helpful to clear out inventory space (16 or 17 slots) so the rewarded items are not deposited on the ground.
  • Due to the dangers of the Underground Desert, the lower chances of getting ores/coins/gems (except Amber) and how common Silt is in other biomes, Desert Fossil is a less viable option for getting ores/coins/gems.
    • Processing Desert Fossil is a good way to obtain Amber and the Amber Mosquito.
  • A full stack of 999 Silt or Slush Blocks yields a fair collection of loot. The table below breaks down, prorates, and summarizes the sale prices.
    • Most of the gems are much more valuable when crafted into Stained Glass: Each gem except Diamond makes 1 worth of Stained Glass.
      • Diamonds cannot be turned into Stained Glass or anything else with a higher sale price than the gems.
    • Gems can also be crafted into Gemcorns, to grow more gems directly.
    • Amber can be crafted into Crate Potions, which allow fishing for crate loot worth far more than the Amber's sale price.
    • If processing Desert Fossils, the resulting Sturdy Fossils are unsalable themselves, but used in a number of recipes, notably Scarab Bombs. Any excess can be turned into Bone Throwing Knives and sold that way.
    • Notice how much of the total average payoff comes from the small chance of obtaining Platinum Coins. The total yields are normally 8 or 9 or so lower, but with a 6%–7% chance per 1000 blocks of a Platinum jackpot.
