Suggestions for improvement[]

A couple of things.

1) Maybe it would be helpful to advise players to proactively work towards preparing for the mess that is hardmode before it actually happens. For example, neither Hallow nor Corruption can jump across gaps at least 3 blocks wide, yes? So they should be encouraged to dig wide mineshafts, and if possible plan their layout so as to act as a barrier against areas they don't want getting infected. Explosives really help speed things up here.

2) It will be (very) likely that total containment not be possible. So instead of planning to contain 'infected' areas, it may be easier to make safe zones instead. For example preserving areas for farming. Given that these zones normally aren't very large cleaning them up in case a breach happens should be easy. Similarly if they need to be purged then rebuilt it shouldn't be too hard if you have spare materials saved up.

Okay, I just remembered about Purification Powder and Vile Powder. They're not too hard to obtain and considering how effective they are (a single dose immediately cures a not-insignificant area of infection) I think they deserve mention. - Spinfx 05:14, 15 December 2011 (UTC)
Well, no, Corruption can easily clear 3 block wide gaps. Have you forgotten about the thorn bushes Corruption creates? They aren't restricted to 3 block gaps as common knowledge knows that they can grow anywhere in corruption, at any angle, to considerable height/width from their roots. And Powder isn't very effective in the way hardmode Corruption spreads underground quite efficiently. The same goes for the Hallow. But I like the idea of safe zones!

Damn, I totally forgot about the Corruption thorns. I suppose we could tell people to line their shafts with bricks then, since afaik nothing can grow on player-made materials. Btw I just spent an hour blasting a chasm around the natural corruption in my world, got totally carried away and the gap is now at least half a screen wide, lol. This could be a fun project for a multiplayer co-op server actually: preparing the world for hardmode. - Spinfx 15:40, 15 December 2011 (UTC)

Thanks to whoever added the image. The dungeon brick-lined airgaps were a nice touch. One thing though, using the Pwnhammer on Demon Altars to spawn the hardmode ores generates additional hallow/corruption in random areas iirc from the article. I can't guess where the infection on my world will reach so instead of guessing how wide an area to contain, I instead dug safe zones instead of containment zones. Basically I extended the gap from underneath the dungeon right down through to the underworld, boxed in the existing natural corruption areas, boxed in my spawn area, and separated the entire jungle vertically on both sides. Still a work in progress though, especially since I have to mine out all the dungeon bricks and it's taking a long time >__> - Spinfx 07:09, 2 January 2012 (UTC)

Question about quarantine[]

1) If you build a quarantine area that is in the path of the initial hallow/corruption spawn, will the quarantine area be left alone? 2) If yes, if the quarantine area had one hole in it, would the entire area be transformed as usual? 3) Throughout the wiki, the most common example is to use bricks or hallow to quarantine areas. 1)Hardmode affects ALL pre-existing Corruption/Hallow.
2)Yes.
3)Probably, but we're Terrarians. We live to build complicated things out of expensive materials, when we could do it simply with inexpensive materials.

That doesn't answer the first question. If the quarantine area is within the stripe of hallow or corruption when the first demon altar is destroyed, will the quarantine area be transformed or will it be an unaffected section of the stripe? --98.116.189.111 22:29, 26 September 2012 (UTC)

A word of warning[]

In my Hardmode world, my Jungle was in danger of corruption.. A Meteor HAD to land.. RIGHT ON TOP OF THE QUARANTINE.

Clentaminator[]

With the introduction of the Clentaminator and its solutions, quarantining and controlling Hallow, Corruption, and Crimson seems to have been simplified greatly, making this guide virtually obsolete. The concepts are still helpful for maintaining isolated areas of 'contaminated' biomes, but fighting outbreaks has become much more plausible, and complete purge even in an unquarantined map may be possible. --69.140.50.55 14:49, 13 November 2013 (UTC)

Hallow CAN spread over corruption/crimson stone. (Console)[]

"Both the Hallow and Corruption cannot convert each other. So corruption surrounded by hallow will not spread, and likewise the other way around. Hallowed grass will take over Crimson grass, but still stops at Crimstone."

Should there be clarification for Complete Conversion?[]

1. I just now learned 1 tile = 2' East/West on the compass, and it confused me beforehand that it said 120 blocks.. I though the 120 referred to the compass measurement, but it turns out that the above is a thing. That's a little odd for the compass IMO. I'm sure other people have known that, but there are dumber people than me for sure (And it's best to assume there are..?)

2. Just a little note in-between the second to last and last paragraph is what I suggest, saying something like "On the compass, this would 120 in either direction." I would put it in myself, but I barely have any wiki activity and I don't really know if I should be putting that out.

PS. It used "blocks" and "tiles" for the same thing right next to each other... a little odd

Thoughts? My brain is pretty fried today, and I'm surprised I even typed this.
