Mechanisms are items that can be activated or activate other mechanisms that are connected to them with wire.

Item Description
Wire.png Wire Connects mechanisms. Can be placed anywhere as long as another wire of the same color is not already present. Can even be placed in mid-air without support. Currently four different colors: Red, Green, Yellow and Blue. Removed with Wire Cutters.
Triggers
Switch.png Switch Triggers activation upon right-clicking. Can be placed anywhere a torch can be placed.
Lever.png Lever Triggers activation upon right-clicking. Can be placed on the floor and on background walls
Brown Pressure Plate.png Pressure Plate Triggers activation when touched; different colored plates are activated by different combinations of the player, NPCs and enemies. Can be placed on the floor like furniture, and becomes partially hidden when placed.
Pink Weighted Pressure Plate.png Weighted Pressure Plate Desktop Version Triggers activation by player when stepping on or off it. Being practically the only trigger in Terraria that creates a pulse. Can be placed on the floor like furniture.
Teal Pressure Pad.png Pressure Pad Desktop Version Triggers activation when touched by projectiles or Pets. Can be placed on the floor, ceiling, or side wall but not on platforms.
Pressure Plate Track.png Pressure Plate Track Triggers activation when a Minecart rides over it.
5 Second Timer.png Timers Once activated, they will keep sending activation signals through the wire they are connected to.
Detonator.png Detonator Desktop Version Triggers activation when touched or right clicked, similar to pressure plates. Found in explosive traps underground.

Gem Lock Desktop Version Once the Large Gem of the Gem Lock has been placed inside, the Gem Lock will trigger activation.
Chest.png Trapped Chest Desktop Version When it is opened, it triggers activation.
Devices
Torch.png Light sources Once activated, they will switch between their 'lit' and 'unlit' states.
Wooden Door.png Doors Once activated, they will switch between their 'open' and 'closed' states.
Trap Door.png Trap Doors Desktop Version Once activated, they will switch between their 'open' and 'closed' states.
Tall Gate.png Tall Gates Desktop Version Once activated, they will switch between their 'open' and 'closed' states.
Inlet Pump.png Pumps Liquid will be pumped from inlet to outlet once per activation.
Active Stone Block.png Toggle-able Blocks Once activated, they will switch between their 'active' and 'inactive' versions. The inactive version will let things pass through them like furniture.
Actuator.png Actuators Like Toggle-able Blocks, but works with almost any block it's placed on.
Dart Trap.png Dart Traps Will shoot poisoned darts once per activation, with a cooldown of three seconds.
Super Dart Trap.png Super Dart Trap A stronger version of the Dart Trap.
Spear Trap.png Spear Trap On activation, shoots out a spear that deals a lot of damage.
Spiky Ball Trap.png Spiky Ball Trap Drops several spiky balls when activated.
Flame Trap.png Flame Trap Shoots out a jet of flame when activated.
Geyser.png Geyser Desktop Version Shoots flame for a maximum of about 20 blocks.
Explosives.png Explosives Once activated, they will detonate instantly.
Cannon.png Cannon Depending on where the wire is connected, either shoots a cannonball or rotates toward the side the wire is on.
Bunny Cannon.png Bunny Cannon Depending on where the wire is connected, either shoots an exploding bunny or rotates toward the side the wire is on.
Music Box.png Music Boxes Once activated, they will play recorded soundtracks.
Bird Statue.png Statues (some) There are 41 statues that function as mechanisms. The other 67 statues are not. Statue mechanisms can spawn a variety of items, creatures, or teleport NPCs.
Chimney.png Chimney Desktop Version The chimney has three states it rotates through: Off and On, and a third state that adds smoke particles.
Teleporter.png Teleporter When activated, teleports the player and/or any NPCs currently standing/walking over it to another Teleporter connected by wire.

Gemspark Block Will toggle "lit" and "unlit" states when activated.
Red Rocket.png Green Rocket.png Blue Rocket.png Yellow Rocket.png Firework Rockets Activated through Wire or by right-clicking. Creates pretty fireworks and damages mobs in the explosion. Consumed on use.
Firework Fountain.png Firework Fountain Activated through Wire or by right-clicking. Creates pretty fireworks.
Fireworks Box.png Fireworks Box Activated through Wire or by right-clicking. Creates pretty fireworks. Does not damage mobs.
Confetti Cannon.png Confetti Cannon Depending on where the wire is connected, either launches confetti or rotates toward the side the wire is on. Does not damage mobs.
Bubble Machine.png Bubble Machine Can be toggled on or off. Creates bubbles.
Silly Balloon Machine.png Silly Balloon Machine Desktop Version Can be toggled on or off. Creates balloons.
Pure Water Fountain.png Water Fountains Activated through Wire or by right-clicking. Changes the water color nearby to that of the fountain's biome.
Vortex Monolith.png Nebula Monolith.png Stardust Monolith.png Solar Monolith.png Monoliths Desktop Version Activated through Wire or by right-clicking. Changes the background to that of the corresponding pillar.
Party Center.png Party Center Desktop Version Activated through Wire or by right-clicking. Can be toggled off, but will turn itself off at 7:30pm. All party centers in the world are activated/deactivated by triggering one.
Land Mine.png Land Mine Activated when a character or monster walks onto it or when activated by Wire, dealing damage and removing it.
Campfire.png Campfires Activated through Wire or by right-clicking.
Portal Gun Station.png Portal Gun Station Desktop Version Depending on where the wire is connected, either shoots a portal, swaps portal colors, or rotates toward the side the wire is on.
Announcement Box.png Announcement Box Desktop Version Announces (in the chat) what was written on the sign when powered.
Other
Junction Box.png Junction Box Desktop Version Allows wires of the same color to cross without connecting. Can be hammered.

  • 1.3.2: Party Center and Silly Balloon Machine introduced.
