Torches are furniture items that produce light when placed, held, or dropped (via the Throw key), and are crucial at all stages of gameplay as primary light sources. Torches provide light permanently, and are never consumed. Regular torches can be found randomly in chests and Pots, as a bonus drop from slimes, or purchased from the Merchant or Skeleton Merchant for
Torches can be placed on the sides or tops of most blocks, on background walls, and on the sides of trees and Wooden Beams. In the Desktop version they can be placed on any type of platform. A placed torch can be retrieved by pressing the ⚷ Open / Activate key on it or by freeing it with a pickaxe or drill. When the block a torch is attached to is broken, the torch will attach itself to any other block or wall directly adjacent to it. If all adjacent blocks surrounding a torch are removed (left, right, and bottom), and no wall exists behind it, it drops like any other item.

Types[edit | edit source]
Standard Torch[edit | edit source]
Standard Torches produce an orange flame, and cannot be placed in liquids. They are crafted with Wood and Gel, but can also be purchased from the Merchant (always) or the Skeleton Merchant (during the second half of every in-game minute) for
50*50 each. Besides being used to craft various other light sources, they are also used to craft Flaming Arrow, Molotov Cocktails, and the Flaming Mace.
Colored Torch[edit | edit source]
Purple, Yellow, Blue, Green, Red, White and Orange Torches can be made by combining standard Torches with gems. There are nine available colors, one for each of the seven gem colors, plus the Pink Torch crafted with Pink Gel and the Rainbow Torch crafted with Rainbow Brick. With the exception of their colors and light levels, these function identically to a standard Torch. The Rainbow Torch cycles through various colors. The Pink Torch is used to craft the Peace Candle, and the Rainbow Torch is used to craft the Rainbow Campfire.
Ice Torch[edit | edit source]
Ice Torches are crafted by combining standard torches with Ice Blocks or in Desktop Pink Ice Blocks, Purple Ice Blocks or Red Ice Blocks and give off a pale blue light. The Ice Torch has a slightly different graphic to the rest of the colored torches. Besides being used to craft the Frozen Campfire and various Frozen and Boreal light sources, they are also used to craft Frostburn Arrows.
Bone Torch[edit | edit source]
Bone Torches are sold by the Skeleton Merchant for
100*1 each during the first half of every in-game minute (a real-world second), other times he sells ordinary Torches. They are used to craft Bone Campfires.
Ultrabright Torch[edit | edit source]
Ultrabright Torches cannot be crafted, but are sometimes sold by the Traveling Merchant for
300*3 each. They shine brighter than normal torches when held. They are used to craft Ultra Bright Campfires and Living Ultrabright Fire Blocks.
Demon Torch[edit | edit source]
Demon Torches can be taken from the Ruined Houses in the Underworld, where they occur naturally. On Desktop, Console, and Mobile, they can also be crafted by combining standard torches with Obsidian. They function identically to standard, colored and Ice Torches, except that they cycle smoothly between red, purple, and blue flame colors. They are used to craft Demon Campfires and Living Demon Fire Blocks.
Cursed and Ichor Torch[edit | edit source]
These torches become available in Hardmode, and emit a bright green or yellow light, respectively. They are unique in that they can be held or placed in liquids and still function normally there. They are crafted by combining standard Torches with Cursed Flames (Cursed Torches) or Ichor (Ichor Torches). They are used to craft Cursed Campfires and Ichor Campfires, respectively.
Desert Torch [edit | edit source]
Desert Torches are crafted by combining standard torches with Hardened Sand Blocks, Hardened Crimsand Blocks, Hardened Ebonsand Blocks or Hardened Pearlsand Blocks. They are used to craft Desert Campfires.
Coral Torch [edit | edit source]
Coral Torches are crafted by combining standard torches with Coral. The Coral Torch has a slightly different graphic to the rest of the colored torches. They can be placed in Water and still function normally there. They are used to craft Coral Campfires.
Corrupt Torch [edit | edit source]
Crimson Torch [edit | edit source]
Hallowed Torch [edit | edit source]
These torches become available in Hardmode. Hallowed Torches are crafted by combining standard torches with Pearlstone Blocks, Hardened Pearlsand Blocks or Pink Ice Blocks. They are used to craft Hallowed Campfires.

Luck [edit | edit source]
This content is transcluded from Luck § Torch Luck.(Maximum: +0.2 / Minimum: 0)
By placing or holding Torches in the correct locations, players can increase their luck:
- Placed torches in the Surface or Space layers are ignored. That is, above 0 feet height/Level Surface, only player held torches will affect luck.
- Torch luck does not apply in the Dungeon or Jungle Temple.
- In the Underground and below, each type of torch present in a 40 tile square radius around the player (and also any torch they are holding) will increase or reduce torch luck, with the total value limited to a maximum of 0.2 and a minimum of 0.
- With some exceptions, biome torches give good luck in their own biome, while giving a luck penalty in any other location.
- Ordinary torches give a penalty anywhere that a biome torch would be available, and especially the Snow Biome. Bone torches give a bonus in biomes without their own biome torch (and also the Ocean).
- Colored and Ultrabright Torches, along with other light sources such as candles, have no effect.
- The good luck, and luck penalty, are independently limited to a maximum of 0.2 for good luck and 0.3 for the luck penalties. Thus, multiple torches of a given type will have no increased benefit, and one or more incorrect torches will completely negate the benefits of torch luck.
- No matter what penalties accumulate, torch luck overall cannot go below 0 -- it can either provide a bonus to luck, or nothing at all.
|Torch||Beneficial locations||Increased torch luck||Reduced torch luck|
|Ice Torch||Snow biome, Underground Snow||0.2||0.2|
|Desert Torch||Desert, Underground Desert||0.2||0.2|
|Jungle Torch||Jungle, Underground Jungle||0.2||0.2|
|Hallowed Torch||Hallow, Underground Hallow||0.2||0.2|
|Corrupt Torch||Corruption, Underground Corruption||0.2||0.2|
|Crimson Torch||Crimson, Underground Crimson||0.2||0.2|
|Cursed Torch||Corruption, Underground Corruption||0.2||0|
|Ichor Torch||Crimson, Underground Crimson||0.2||0|
|Coral Torch||Oceans||0.2||0 or 0.2 (see notes)|
|Bone Torch||Anywhere outside the Snow biome, Desert, Jungle,
Corruption, Crimson, Hallow, Dungeon or Jungle Temple
|Torch||None||0||0, 0.1 or 0.3 (see notes)|
- Coral torches reduce torch luck by 0.2 only when placed outside water and when outside the Ocean biomes. They increase luck in the Ocean biome whether or not they are in water.
- Regular torches reduce torch luck by 0.1 in the Desert, Jungle, Corruption, Crimson, and Hallow biomes and by 0.3 in the Snow biome. No effects in other locations.
- Bone Torches will provide some benefit in biomes without their own torch (Forest, Glowing Mushroom, Space, Underworld, "plain" Caverns) and also the Ocean.
To maximize luck, players should try to use biome torches underground in their respective biomes, and avoid using the torches for the wrong biome. They should also avoid using ordinary torches in any biome which has its own torch. Bone Torches are useful for biome borders, to avoid standing in one biome with the other biome's torches in range. Above the "level surface", players can boost their luck by holding the proper torch; clearly this will not help with fishing, or anything else that requires a non-torch tool. Combat can still be affected defensively, and by way of indirect attacks: Minions, sentries, armor effects.
If Torch God's Favor is toggled on, "regular" torches are automatically converted to the proper type when held and/or placed in the Hallow, Corruption, Crimson, Jungle, Desert and Snow biomes. Bone Torches and Demon torches can also be automatically placed in the Dungeon or Underworld respectively, but those still have no effect on luck there. (Bone Torches would give a bonus in the Underworld.)
