Throwing the shield to bounce off 3 Mimics, then parrying a Unicorn's attack

The Sergeant United Shield is a Hardmode boomerang. Only one can be thrown at a time. It automatically homes in on nearby enemies and will chain its attack to 4 additional enemies, however it will not hit an enemy more than once per throw. It is rarely sold by the Traveling Merchant for 35.

Like the Brand of the Inferno, with any equipped shield (including the Sergeant United Shield when not thrown) and holding this boomerang, pressing the ⚷ Interact button will cause the character to brace for the next attack. When timed correctly, just before taking a hit, the enemy's attack will be parried, dealing some damage to the attacker and granting the Striking Moment buff for the next five seconds. This allows the next melee attack to deal 5× damage. Alternatively, if the shield is held in place, 20 defense is temporarily gained; this lasts until the shield is once again lowered.

Its best modifier is Godly or Demonic. Both modifiers increase the average damage output by the same amount.

Notes

• Like the Brand of the Inferno, the Sergeant United Shield's damage reflection ability can only be used to deflect contact damage from enemies. Fall damage, lava damage, enemy projectiles, and traps will still harm the player.
• It can, however, reduce damage from these sources with the 20 defense gained while pressing the ⚷ Open / Activate button.
• Due to its high velocity and slow use time, the Sergeant United Shield will usually return to the player a few seconds before it can be thrown again.
• Parrying in Journey Mode with Godmode enabled will do nothing.
• Successfully parrying an attack prevents all damage to the player, grants 30 / 60 (with Cross Necklace equipped) immunity frames, and applies knockback.
• Parrying an attack deals the same damage as attacks reflected by the Thorns Effect of Turtle armor, which is twice that of a Thorns Potion.
• The damage dealt by parrying an attack is decreased by banners (25% in Classic or lower, 50% in Expert or above), rerolled inversely by luck (having negative luck will give a chance to increase incoming damage, and thorns as a result), and capped at 1000 damage.

• The player must be facing an enemy to parry its attack.
• Even on its way back, the shield will hit no more than 5 enemies with one throw.

Tips

• The method of gaining the attack buff and switching to a more powerful weapon like Meowmere has potential for massive damage, especially if somehow timed perfectly with the Psycho Knife's buffs.
• This weapon will home in on the separate sections of a Wyvern, making it an excellent weapon against it.

Trivia

• This weapon is a reference to the fictional superhero Captain America's vibranium-steel alloy shield that appears in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Its tooltip is one of his most iconic lines in the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies.

• Desktop 1.4.2.1: Fixed buff tooltip incorrectly stating 500% increased damage, now correctly states 400% increased damage (500% total).
