Chests
I hear there's a secret treasure... oh never mind.
Chests are storage items that each hold up to 40 item stacks in rows of 10x4. Chests can be freed with either a Pickaxe or a Drill, but only when empty. It is impossible to destroy the blocks underneath a placed Chest.
In addition to being craftable, a number of Chests are created during world generation, and placed in random map locations. The loot contained in these Chests is determined during world generation, and will not change if the world enters Hardmode.
There are 20 varieties of naturally-occurring Chests (15 of which cannot be crafted) and 27 craftable ones, plus the Barrel and Trash Can, for a total of 42 Chest types and 44 placed storage items overall (besides Dressers and portable storage items).
There is a maximum limit of 1000 placed storage items in each world (excluding portable storage like the Safe, Piggy Bank, and Defender's Forge, as well as showcase items like the Item Frame, Weapon Rack, and Mannequin). Attempts to place additional storage items beyond the max will result in a dropped item, rather than placement.
On the Desktop version and
Console version, placed Chests can be renamed (20 character max). Hovering the mouse cursor over a renamed Chest will show its name. If the chest hasn't been renamed, no name will display. To rename a Chest, first open it via ⚷ Open / Activate. The default Chest name reflects the Chest type (e.g. a Living Wood Chest has the default name "Living Wood Chest"). Select "Rename", and a keyboard interface will be displayed, allowing you to click letters or use your keyboard to type in a new name. Press ↵ Enter or click "Save" when finished. Chest names can also use the same text formatting as Announcement Boxes and Chat messages.

Notes[edit | edit source]
- Before opening a chest outside of a dungeon in a Hardmode world, it would be advisable to shoot it with a ranged weapon or summon a minion, because the chest might really be a Mimic. If it is, it will take damage and start chasing the player.
Craftable Chests[edit | edit source]
- All crafted Chests can be sold for 1
, except the Dynasty Chest, Steampunk Chest and Honey Chest, which all sell for 5
; and the Glass Chest, which sells for 60
.

Surface Loot[edit | edit source]
Ordinary Chests that occur naturally on the Surface contain various loot that the player can take and place in their own inventory. Each chest contains a single "rare item" and an assortment of randomly chosen common items.
|
|
Underground Loot[edit | edit source]
The loot for any given chest is determined by the location in which it is found. Each chest contains a single "rare item" and an assortment of randomly chosen common items. The rare item is first placed in the chest, then each "set" of common items is checked to see whether or not it will be added. If a set is chosen to be added, a single item from the list is added to the chest.
Sets are displayed in the list below divided by horizontal borders. For example, the Wooden Arrow and the Shuriken both reside in the same set, so they will never both appear in the same chest.
Underground[edit | edit source]
- The Extractinator has a lower spawn chance than other rare items, at 5%.
- If a chest contains a Flare Gun, it also contains Flares.
- The Bars it contains will depend on the ore types available in the current world.
|
|
Cavern[edit | edit source]
- The Lava Charm has a lower spawn chance than other rare items, at 2.5%.
- The Extractinator similarly has only a 6.5% chance.
- If a chest contains a Flare Gun, it also contains Flares.
- The Bars it contains will depend on the ore types available in the current world.

Dungeon[edit | edit source]
- Aside from the items listed here, Gold Chests in the Dungeon will also contain common Gold Chest items listed above, depending on the height in which they were found: Underground or Cavern.
- Gold Chests in the Dungeon require one Golden Key each to be opened.
- Regular wooden Chests in the Dungeon will always spawn with one Golden Key, along with height-dependent common items.

Crafting[edit | edit source]
Most chests can be crafted into Trapped Chests, losing their storage capability in exchange of making them a Mechanism.
Notes[edit | edit source]
- On the
Mobile version and
Old-gen console version, Chests will gain a yellow outline upon getting close to them to signify they are within range to be opened.
- Underground and Cavern loot seems rarer on
Wii U.Verify
