Determining if an enemy is a Boss, mini-Boss, or just an enemy[edit source]

It basically boils down to this:

Bosses = determined by game-code: "this.boss = true;" (except for Martian Saucer).
Mini-bosses = the other trophy-dropping characters.

Unfair Regulations[edit source]

This page is editable by registered users. It takes about ten seconds to put in a username and password, and any user that registers is automatically confirmed. This is not oppressively restrictive, just a minimal amount of protection to bottleneck access to one of the most vandalized pages on the wiki. Pix or it didn't happen?![edit source]

This page is central to the game basics, and its way too primitive.

One screenshot per boss couldn't hurt that much can it? We have text fields spanning full width and for no good reason. Well... exactly why is the King Slime a "mini boss"? With 1.1 it can be summoned in the same manner as the full-fledged bosses. Also, as Ickepointed out (farther down the page), in the code it is marked as a boss. I can see no real difference - practical or otherwise. Wyvern as a Mini-boss[edit source]

I honestly don't see the problem with keeping it, it has specific summoning conditions like the King Slime and it's not like it's an easy fight. Also, like other bosses, the Wyvern drops Souls, which are game centric at that point. I think it's importance warrants it's own mini-section. I mean, we could be out of our minds and call it a boss, but we aren't, isn't this a modest proposal of compromise? Chaosvii7 07:14, 9 December 2011 (UTC)

Unlike King Slime there is no ingame message upon spawn and defeating, therefore game doesn't recognize it as Boss enemy. Why we should then? Because some players admit it like a boss-hard enemy? It's not.--Preceding unsigned comment added by 178.45.43.220 (talkcontribs)

It's not a mini-boss. The defining feature is the text announcement. It's just the hardmode equivalent of a Bone Serpent. I was more agreeable to the idea that it was a miniboss until I was running around in full Hallow. The source code has a line "boss=true" for bosses and also for King Slime (no idea why it is demoted to mini-boss), but it doesn't have that line for the Wyvern, so it is no (mini-)boss. --Icke 16:12, 12 December 2011 (UTC)

Summoning Hardmode Bosses in Pre-Hardmode World[edit source]

It is possible to summon and fight Hardmode bosses in a Pre-Hardmode world. Doing so nor defeating them will cause any change to the world, in fact I think even the Dryad may not arrive by doing so though I think I only experienced such due to lacking adequate housing; how nice nobody has to worry about that ! However, bosses such as Plantera,Golem,Ocram,Lunatic Cultist,Moon Lord, and some hardmode event bosses could not be fought pre-hardmode. 199.244.112.226 06:46, 24 June 2016 (UTC)

Chances[edit source]

Monster spawnrate while fighting boss?[edit source]

Are monsters spawn rate reduced while fighting a boss? Some people said no monsters spawn while fighting a boss, while some people said they still see monsters around while fighting boss (most often thing i heard: wyvern while fighting mechanical boss)..

I personally never encounter any normal monster while fighting a boss (except if it spawned before i summoned the boss)

Something I noticed while browsing the Boss page is that the paragraph with information about this boss (Stardust and Vortex pillar) is swapped. The paragraph about the stardust pillar is listed under Vortex and reversed. Dupli-glitch?[edit source]

Even though it is intended that only one boss of a kind could be alive at the same time. However, I noticed that bosses that could natrually spawn and have a summoning item could have two alive--when a night where the boss will natrually spawn, use the summoning item. both bosses will spawn. also, queen bee could be spawned by breaking multiple larva, or by using a abeemination first and then breaking larva. 199.244.112.226 06:44, 24 June 2016 (UTC)

Is Mothron a boss?[edit source]

Okay, so we're going to have this discussion again I guess. We've had it before plenty of times- refer to this case in particular for the most recent decision that comes to mind, and remain civil in making your points.

I'm gonna lay out some general evidence for and against:

  • For:
    • Mothron is a large, powerful enemy with unique attack patterns and the ability to pass through blocks, generally regarded as boss-like behavior.
    • Killing Mothron grants more progress towards event completion than killing any other single Eclipse enemy.
    • Mothron has a few unique items that only it can drop.
    • Similar enemies can spawn during similar events and are included in this list.
  • Against:
    • Mothron has neither a trophy, mask, unique spawn message nor boss music, generally regarded as boss-like traits.
    • Other similar difficult enemies are omitted from this list for lacking several of the above properties, or having traits of regular enemies (normal spawning, dropping banners, etc).
    • Multiple Mothrons can spawn during a Solar Eclipse.
    • While the Goblin Invasion's entry on the 1.3.0.1 changelog refers to a "new mini boss enemy", the Solar Eclipse entry only a few lines down only refers to "several new enemies".

Everyone involved in this checks Recent Changes, so I know you can read this, but this discussion is open to other opinions as well. I'm leaving this page unlocked as a show of good faith, because no matter what state I protect it in, it'll seem like I'm taking a side. I believe that Mothron in fact is a mini-boss, even though it doesn't drop a trophy. For example with the Celestial Pillars, do they drop trophies? They don't. Also, adding to the fact the the Pillars don't drop trophies, the Mothron even though doesn't show up on the minimap, it can certainly be considered as a boss, for it possesses the following qualities that some regular bosses have.
  • Drops unique items
  • Mothron AI is very similar to Spazmatism second stage AI, with lunging attacks.
  • More health than any other enemy in the Solar Eclipse, which in turn, makes it harder to defeat.
  • More coins upon defeated.
  • Larger point buff toward the Solar Eclipse.

Hi, I started this whole discussion, so I want to make sure that At least my opinion gets stated.
If we see it from the EVENT ONLY perspective, the Mothron SHOULD be considered a Mini-Boss as it's the enemy with the largest HP and most unique Items of the event, but I do concede that from the perspective against all the other "mini-bosses", the Mothron fails in both "optional" requisites that we have driven to impose for them, as it's either that they drop a trophy OR appear on the Mini-Map.
That being said, it's up to us to add it or not to this page. I THINK that it should be added to give presence to the Solar Eclipse Event with this representative Enemy (as for now, there's no mention of the event whatsoever, even though it has a large chunk of hard enemies and also a big amount of items worth of being here, against for example the Frost Legion Invasion).
So, in any case, the arguments exposed before are valid, but the Mini-boss category it's very misused around the wiki, and we should make a general guideline for wether it's or it's not an enemy considered a Mini-Boss. Frenchiveruti (talk) 01:30, 21 August 2016 (UTC)
A while back (over a year ago), there was a lengthly debate on what constitutes a mini-boss. Look here and here, only don't add to that discussion (give your thoughts here instead). In a nutshell: There are some who believe that the Goblin Summoner is a mini-boss, but it doesn't satisfy our current definition of what a mini-boss is. And you can't go by what was stated in release notes, because the Ice Golem was referred to as a mini-boss. We do need clear guidelines, which should perhaps be posted on the Boss page for all to see. I attempted to list the guidelines at the top of this discussion page, but obviously the definition I gave was incomplete. Do we need a third category of boss-like enemy? Well, what about a divison by monster's HP. We could use a guideline that if a monster has a certain amount of HP it falls in a "big enemy" category, super-enemy is IMO a little too much haha, but "small, medium and big" enemy categories seem just fine, as I made on the Frost Moon and Pumpkin Moon events (although those are named "medium" enemies as they surpass the 1k of HP)-. It's an idea. Super-enemy sounds a little too close to super-villain, lol! I'm not sure about "small, medium and big", as they usually describe size, so it may cause some confusion. Something to think about though.
Regarding the "boss" labeling, I think editors are trying to justify adding Mothron (and Goblin Summoner) as event bosses. If we decide that every event has an event boss, I suppose we could call Mothron, Goblin Summoner, Ice Golem, and Clown "event quasi-bosses". I'm just not sure an enemy is an event boss simply because it has the highest HP in the event. Does every event need a boss? Maybe not. Maybe "no trophy, no boss=true, no mini-map display, no boss music, no spawn message" means not-a-boss.

What debuffs are bosses immune to?[edit source]

I think it would be very helpful to everyone to make a list of which debuffs a certain boss is immune to or vulnerable to, depending on which list is smaller, and then put this list on that boss's page, AND that boss's strategy guide. I'm making this suggestion because I want to know what a boss is and isn't immune to, instead of going on the debuff page of every debuff I use and finding out which pages that boss is in a list on. Messed up, possible ID error[edit source]

This page should be fixed, idk how with images and whatnot, but the first three bosses are okay but for example the WoF is showing as an Abeemination. It could be a bug on my side though Anonymous132547698 (talk) 19:57, 18 January 2017 (UTC)

Non-standard Boss Pages[edit source]

I was wondering why certain Boss Pages list the Boss differently. Some have the Boss' parts in a separate section, while others do not. What should be standard? I can fix it, but would like input on what would be best. Shadowjared24 (talk) 15:01, 1 July 2017 (UTC)

Most pages seem to follow the standard where:
  • Boss with parts combined (forms/stages if applicable) on top right
  • Individual Boss parts in separate section

Thank you for responding and looking into it. I should have been more specific. My bad, oops. Anyways, I know that some of them are just fine, but I am referring to how Skeletron shows the head and hand in the top right, but Skeletron Prime shows just the head in the top right and the arms in a separate section. I know the Hand is only one part, but the Flying Dutchman only shows one part under the "Parts" Section. Also, Golem does not have its Second Stage in a separate NPC Infobox. I am also wondering if the Moon Lord should be separated by the stages as well. Turkor the Ungrateful also has its parts and the entirety in the top right corner instead of having its parts in a separate section. Shadowjared24 (talk) 20:28, 1 July 2017 (UTC)
