Like Dr. Bones really being Doctor Bones in game, I am curious to know if it really should be Harpy or Harpey. Are the change notes correct or is the game correct? If the game turns out to be the correct spelling then Harpey is not a bug and should eventually be changed to this if nothing happens to change it. I won't suggest a name change quite yet but for now I'm putting the thought out there since it has happened multiple times during the 1.0.4 update. -- Kalilla 08:26, 11 June 2011 (UTC)

I guess wiki is right, it's a developer tendency to incorrectly spell -y as -ey. (Shiney Red Balloon, for example. It was renamed later.) --Barhandar 08:45, 11 June 2011 (UTC)
I would recommend the page is named the way it is in game, rather than assuming the developers made a typo. It's easy enough to move the page if it is indeed changed in game later. -- Wynthyst Curseicon talk 04:18, 14 June 2011 (UTC)
It is Harpy, I looked inside the .exe and Harpy uses a projectile called Harpy Feather. So it is 100% Harpy, they just have to fix the name in game next update. -- ❤Kalilla❤ 04:58, 14 June 2011 (UTC)

Harpy Feather Harpy Feather[]

I posted the name of Harpy's projectile's on the main page and linking it to this section for reference. Harpy uses a projectile called Harpy Feather (yes, a real name). Here is the little information that I can get from it:

Projectile Name: Harpy Feather
Width: 14
Height: 14
Hostile/Friendly: Hostile
Penetrating: Yes
TileCollide: Yes (breaks up upon collision of a tile)

And that's about it that I can pull from the game itself. We know the dimensions of the feather picture is 24x14. This suggests the back end (or front end, whichever is the case) is the only damaging part of the projectile. This would explain some of the unexplainable close calls I've had. This could also be explained by system lag and could mean absolutely nothing at all, so this does need testing to determine if the front end or back end (or the whole feather) is the damaging part of the projectile. -- ❤Kalilla❤ 00:33, 15 June 2011 (UTC)

Confirmation of Harpy Spawn[]

Please provide any evidence to where Harpy can spawn in the sky and where it can't. This doesn't include elevation, but horizontal location.

I've noticed that they do not spawn near one of the floating islands. This isn't to say that it is impossible for them to be near floating islands as that is not true. I've just noticed it happening on one of them as they refuse to get near it. -- ❤Kalilla❤ 02:53, 14 June 2011 (UTC)
Also, Theothersteve7, you mentioned, "they can only spawn a certain distance away from the center of the map; about a thousand blocks or so". Could you clarify this some more? Are you saying that within a thousand blocks of either direction of the start spawn the Harpy monster cannot spawn? So a thousand blocks and out they can and thats where they hang out. If this is what you mean that explains what I was talking about quite well. Please reply back here when you can -- ❤Kalilla❤ 03:18, 14 June 2011 (UTC)
Sorry, I meant that they only spawn once you have traveled away from the center of the map. Let me explain in detail.
  1. First, I made an area at the top center of my map with the intention of fighting Harpies there. When it failed to work, I started experimenting.
  2. I went to the nearest two floating islands and they both spawned harpies quickly.
  3. Then, I tried making a random pillar and climbing to the top - this also spawned harpies.
  4. Finally, I created a skybridge from the height of my base and counted the number of stacks of blocks it took until a Harpy spawned. The first Harpy spawned around three and a half stacks; given the offset I started from, that's almost exactly one thousand blocks out.
If you would like to test this further I highly encourage it. I have a theory that this is the minimum distance for the King Slime as well, though that's harder to test. --Theothersteve7 13:23, 14 June 2011 (UTC)
Three and a half stacks of blocks, so that's roughly 875 blocks out from the center of the map. That is roughly 1,750 feet from the center of your map. That sounds like perfect logic to me, a nice round number. It might not be "exactly" 875 blocks but that's a nice user friendly number. I'll test it either tonight or tomorrow but thanks for the great information Theothersteve7!
I'll also assume your using a large world map, so this might affect what size of world you created. I'll have to check a few things first. -- ❤Kalilla❤ 23:19, 14 June 2011 (UTC)
Medium-sized map. Thanks. By the way, they can spawn much closer than the King Slime (as you probably knew). I don't think it's the NPC town effect unless it follows strange shape rules; the harpy tower extends all the way to the top of the map. I'm trying to figure it out in the code but the harpy rules are pretty convoluted. --Theothersteve7 03:43, 15 June 2011 (UTC)
Here is the if statement in the code to determine if it should spawn a harpy.
if (!flag3 && (double)num14 < Main.worldSurface * 0.30000001192092896 && !flag5 && ((double)num13 < (double)Main.maxTilesX * 0.35 || (double)num13 > (double)Main.maxTilesX * 0.65))
flag3 = is the tile underwater?
num14 = the tile's y coordinate ( higher number = lower height )
num13 = the tile's x coordinate
flag5 = is the player near town npcs?
Main.worldSurface is y-coordinate of the "0 depth" line --GauHelldragon 01:55, 7 July 2011 (UTC)
I made a dirtbridge 856ft up and 2436ft to the right of the spawn (until I saw a harpy) on the largest map size. I passed by a floating island on the way but there weren't any harpies up there since it was too close to the center of the map. The figures could do with a little rounding so 2400ft (1200 blocks) seems appropriate and agrees with the code posted above.
As of 1.1 they also seem to spawn in the middle third of the map. 91.34.49.27 05:48, 3 December 2011 (UTC)
I noticed the same thing and updated the text, but the image remains. 99.186.225.51 23:18, 31 December 2012 (UTC)

Spawn Rate[]

Just cuz i wonder, is 15 during blood moon, without blue lantern, if it is. What is spawnrate during blood moon with blue lantern and battle potion? - Chicunsu

Are Harpy's even nessasary??[]

I hate harpy's because I consider floating islands a luxary! I can put up with corruption but it is nearly impossible to get to floating island on a strait vertical line even with 340hp and 200mana max! I'm just asking, please reply with your opinion, helping or not, please don't be rude unless you feel you need to, thank you.

I know of a few ways to counteract the harpy attacks, ( there may be more I haven't thought of yet)

1: cobalt shield, you will take damage but at least you won't fall.

2: grappling hook/ivy whip, even if you fall you can easily get back up, or jump off and grapple to the side to avoid projectiles.

3: Supposedly the projectiles can be deflected with weapons? (They cannot be blocked by a weapon)

4: using a long range weapon to shoot down the harpies before they pile up.

5: using a gravity potion to completely avoid using the vertical tower technique and just fall up to the islands. ( make sure you stop yourself! you might die from the ... rise?)

6: Use a lucky horseshoe/featherfall potion/cloud in a bottle so falling doesn't matter ( yes you must climb back up )

-Doomy101

The projectiles cannot be deflected, I was fighting some harpies and my sword didn't deflect the projectiles 70.128.114.114 22:04, 8 July 2011 (UTC)

Noise glitch[]

Hello, everyone. I was trying to get Martian Probes to spawn, and I was on a skybridge. Suddenly, I hear some mummy, zombie, and pixie noises. I keep trying to find the enemies, but all I find are HARPIES. So why are the harpies making weird noises? 108.238.136.72 03:20, 2 September 2015 (UTC)

same. but i heard in prehardmode and also turn out angry dandelions do it. 188.120.87.87 10:44, 19 May 2020 (UTC)

Harpy AI regarding stealth[]

It seems that Harpies still shoot feathers at the player even in stealth but passes by the player. 152.32.108.154 06:29, 22 May 2020 (UTC)
