— The Merchant

Torches can be picked from the wall by pressing the Open / Activate key and used to light up the region around the player.
Torches held by the player will be put out upon entering water, even if the water is waist level and would not reach it.

Torches are furniture items that produce light when placed, held, or dropped (via the Throw key), and are crucial at all stages of gameplay as primary light sources. Torches provide light permanently, and are never consumed. Regular torches can be found randomly in chests and Pots, as a bonus dropDesktop, Console, and Mobile Versions from slimes, or purchased from the Merchant or Skeleton MerchantDesktop, Console, and Mobile Versions for 50*50 Copper Coin.png each.

Torches can be placed on the sides or tops of most blocks, on background walls, and on the sides of trees and Wooden Beams. In the Desktop version Desktop version they can be placed on any type of platform. A placed torch can be retrieved by pressing the Open / Activate key on it or by freeing it with a pickaxe or drill. When the block a torch is attached to is broken, the torch will attach itself to any other block or wall directly adjacent to it. If all adjacent blocks surrounding a torch are removed (left, right, and bottom), and no wall exists behind it, it drops like any other item.

Torches are also mechanisms that can be toggled on and off via Wire.

They are crafted with Wood and Gel, but can also be purchased from the Merchant (always) or the Skeleton MerchantDesktop, Console, and Mobile Versions (during the second half of every in-game minute) for 50*50 Copper Coin.png each. Luck[edit | edit source]

Desktop version Desktop-Only Content: This information applies only to the Desktop version of Terraria.

This content is transcluded from Luck/Torch Luck.(Maximum: +0.2 / Minimum: 0)

By placing or holding Torches in the correct locations, players can increase their luck. Torch luck is computed by searching in a 40 tile square radius around the player for one of each torch type. Each torch type found affect two distinct scores: the "positive score" and the "negative score". With a few exceptions, torches placed in their preferred biome will increase the positive score, and if placed in any other location, will increase the negative score instead.

Torch luck does not apply in the Dungeon or Lihzahrd Temple and nearby torches are ignored in the Surface or Space layers.

If biomes overlap, positive score is preferred. For example, if there's a corrupt torch and a desert torch in a corrupt desert (without any other torches), the score will be 2. However, if you also place a hallowed torch nearby, it will give negative score of 1, eliminating the positive impact on luck.

  • Regular torches have a negative score of 0.5 in the Desert, Corruption, Crimson and Hallow biomes, and a negative score of 2 in the Snow biome.
  • Coral Torches will only have a negative score if not placed in water.
  • More than one of the same type of Torch does not affect the score.

After tallying up all Torch types around the player to determine the positive and negative scores, the contribution to overall luck is determined:

  • If positive score ≥ 1, torch luck gets +0.2.
  • If 0 < positive score < 1, torch luck gets +0.1.
  • If 0 < negative score < 1, torch luck gets -0.1.
  • If 1 ≤ negative score < 2, torch luck gets -0.2.
  • If negative score ≥ 2, torch luck gets -0.3.
  • After that, torch luck is raised to a minimum of zero if it is lower, so it can't negatively affect overall luck.

Therefore, to maximize luck, players should try to use biome torches whenever possible, as well as avoid using said biome torches in the wrong biomes. Bone Torches will provide some benefit in biomes without their own torch (Forest, Glowing Mushroom, Space, Underworld, "plain" Caverns, and Ocean above water). Any torches not listed above (Pink, Gem, Rainbow, Ultrabright) and other light sources have no effect.

If Torch God's Favor is toggled on, torches are automatically converted to the corresponding torch for the biome, if applicable.

Notes[edit | edit source]

  • With the exception of the Coral Torch, Cursed Torch and Ichor Torch, torches do not function under water. A torch thrown into water will not emit light once it submerges, and if a player enters water with a torch selected in the hotbar, the torch will not be visible and will emit no light. Placed torches are freed when water touches them, and drop as items.
  • Holding the Auto Select key with the cursor over empty space will automatically prepare the torches in the player's inventory, allowing for quick placement or easy access to light.
  • White Torches appear to produce the most light of any light source in the game.
  • Torches provide more light when placed than they do when held or dropped, with the exception of the Ultrabright.
  • Torches are the only item where it is possible to throw (via the Throw key) just one of the item. For all other items the entire stack gets thrown.
  • Throwing a torch will cause it to only go a few tiles forwards before falling straight down. For a light source that can be tossed farther, Glowsticks or Flares should be used (though note that Glowsticks are thrown by selecting them and then pressing the Use / Attack button, not by pressing Throw).
  • Despite appearing dim, Blue Torches can reach a respectable distance with the "Trippy" lighting mode selected, which is extended even farther under the effects of a Night Owl Potion.
  • While in Smart Cursor mode, the player can only place torches in dark places.
  • Rainbow torches are the hardest to obtain.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Orange Torches were apparently added because of a "really persistent nagging brit" in reference to the YouTuber ChippyGaming AKA James Bennett.[4]
  • Torch flame animations continue to play while the game is paused.
  • If a block is placed above a torch, the torch will lower. If there is no block above it, the torch gets higher. This can be seen best using a Trap Door and opening/closing it.
