Beetle armor is a Hardmode, post-Golem armor set with defensive and melee boosts. It is not a direct upgrade of the Turtle armor set, despite the fact that it is crafted from Turtle armor, it loses the thorns effect it had in exchange for other buffs. It is the endgame melee armor on the Old-gen console version, Windows Phone version, and Nintendo version. On the PC version, Console version, Mobile version, Old Chinese version, tModLoader version, and tModLoader 1.3-Legacy version, it is mostly outclassed by Solar Flare armor.
Beetle armor has two variants for its chest piece; Beetle Scale Mail and Beetle Shell. The Beetle Scale Mail enhances damage output and is slightly more agile, whereas the Beetle Shell provides more defense.
Beetle armor provides the following bonuses when fully equipped:
With Beetle Scale Mail
- +8% melee critical hit chance
- +14% melee damage
- +12% melee speed
- +12% movement speed
- Significantly higher chance that enemies will target the wearer
- Beetle Might offensive buff: increases melee speed and damage by increments of 10% when successfully damaging Enemies. The boost can be raised up to 30%, and the rate at which it increases depends on total damage dealt per second. Dealing less than roughly 180 damage per second will not grant Beetle Might at all. The buff depletes at an accelerating rate as long as the wearer does not deal damage, meaning that the buff will reset very quickly outside of combat.
With Beetle Shell
- +5% melee critical hit chance
- +11% melee damage
- +6% melee speed
- +6% movement speed
- Significantly higher chance that enemies will target the wearer
- Beetle Endurance defensive buff: When the player avoids taking damage, this buff reduces damage taken on the next hit by 15%, with further boosts to 30% and 45% if the player continues to avoid damage for a longer duration. The buff gets first applied after 3 seconds from taking damage, and will then increase after another 3 seconds. When the player takes damage thereafter, each hit lowers the boost applied to the next hit by one step. This buff features a visual effect showing one to three "beetles" flying around the player, signifying the 15%, 30%, or 45% damage reduction boost currently in effect.
Crafting the full set with one chest piece requires 18 Beetle Husks and a full set of Turtle armor (54 Chlorophyte Bars (or 324 pieces of Chlorophyte Ore), and 3 Turtle Shells). Crafting all four pieces from scratch requires 26 Beetle Husks, 78 Chlorophyte Bars (or 468 pieces of Chlorophyte Ore), and 4 Turtle Shells.

Notes
- When upgrading to Beetle armor from Turtle armor, the stats and defense increase greatly, but the thorns effect is lost. Keep this in mind when preparing for activities requiring a thorns effect.
- While the Beetle Shell is equipped without any items occupying the social slot, Wings will not appear unless the player is in mid-air, similar to the Turtle armor, Leaf Blower, and Heat Ray.
- The Endurance Potion stacks with the Beetle Endurance buff.
- Endurance Potion, Beetle armor at its 45% state and Worm Scarf will reduce damage by about 60%; Frozen Turtle Shell will further increase it to 74%.
- In Expert mode
, it may be more useful to have the Beetle Shell because of the extra defense as well as the damage reduction because all enemies do more damage.
Tips
- It is possible to reach a defense of over 100 without buffs by wearing the full set with the Shell, a Paladin's Shield or Flesh Knuckles or both, and all accessories reforged to Warding.
- Taking melee damage, speed, and critical hits into consideration, max DPS is increased by roughly 75% with three beetles (when using Beetle Scale Mail). However, if you had just the chest piece, the Hallowed Mask and the Valhalla Knight's Greaves, it would increase your overall DPS by roughly 89% as well as providing 3 more defense and 18% more movement speed without the increased Enemy targeting.
- The Beetle Shell's Damage Reduction stacks multiplicatively, meaning adding other Damage Reduction items such as the Endurance Potion and the Worm Scarf will give diminishing returns. The damage reduction is calculated as follows:
%DR=100*(1-(1-[Instance #1])(1-[Instance #2)(1-[Instance #3])...)
with all instances being percents. If an Endurance Potion and Worm Scarf are used in conjunction with Beetle Shell and three beetles are present, the Percent Damage Reduction will be100*(1-(1-0.45)(1-0.1)(1-0.17)
, the Damage Reduction will only be ~60%. Because of this, it may be favorable to use more healing or damage-oriented accessories instead of a Worm Scarf when wearing the Beetle Shell Variant of this armor.
Trivia
- With the full Beetle Endurance buff and a Lifeforce Potion (600 HP) and/or Endurance Potion, it is possible to not be one-hit-killed by the Dungeon Guardian.
- The Beetle Armor set (as of 1.2.3) is the first and only armor set to have multiple chest piece variants as opposed to helmet variants.
- Solar Flare armor
actually provides more defense than either of the chest variants. However, the Beetle Shell provides 45% max damage reduction as opposed the the Solar Flare Shield's maximum 30% reduction.
