Debuffs are temporary, negative status effects, as opposed to Buffs, which affect the player positively. Once a debuff has been inflicted, the debuff's icon will display to the upper left of the player's window , along with a count-down timer, showing how much longer the debuff will be in effect. The counter will begin at one minute/second less than its listed duration and show zero during the final minute/second.
Most debuffs can only be inflicted by enemies, however it is also possible for traps to inflict some debuffs on players.
Players can inflict the following debuffs on most enemies: Confused, Cursed Inferno, Ichor Debuff, Midas, Poisoned, Venom, On Fire!, Frostburn and Shadowflame. Players can also inflict Bleeding on enemies via the old-gen console/mobile/3DS-exclusive Tizona. Players can inflict the Stunned debuff via the mobile exclusive ammunition Heart Arrow.
In general, damaging debuffs will stack: If a player is both Poisoned and On Fire!, they will take damage from both debuffs. However, Poisoned and Venom do not stack, and Poisoned will take precedence over Venom. Death always cancels any active buffs or debuffs.
Unlike buffs, Debuffs cannot be cancelled by right-clicking their icons.
The Nurse can cancel debuffs at a cost of 7 50 per active debuff.

- Expert mode: The following debuffs have their duration doubled in expert mode: Poisoned, Darkness, Cursed, On Fire!, Bleeding, Confused, Slow, Weak, Silenced, Broken Armor, Cursed Inferno, Frostburn, Chilled, Frozen, Ichor Debuff, Venom, Blackout.
- Expert mode: In expert mode, the player is inflicted with Chilled when they enter water in a Snow biome.
