The Drax is a Hardmode (Desktop onlyConsole versionOld-gen console versionMobile version) / pre-Hardmode (Nintendo 3DS version) drill and axe combination which can be crafted after all three mechanical bosses have been defeated. It is able to mine any block other than Lihzahrd Bricks.

The Drax is an alternative to the Pickaxe Axe. Appearances and sounds aside, these two tools are functionally identical and have no stat differences.

On the Nintendo 3DSNintendo 3DS version version, the Drax can be found in Shadow Chests in The Underworld.

Its best modifier is Godly or Demonic. Both modifiers increase the average damage output by the same amount.

Tips

  • Due to its rapid attack speed, high damage and low knockback, it can serve as a melee weapon for low-end close-range targets.
  • Nintendo 3DS version Finding the Drax in a Shadow Chest will give the player a significant mining advantage, as it can mine all pre-Plantera blocks, at which point the Picksaw is needed. It makes killing the mechanical bosses much easier, as the player will have access to Chlorophyte gear and Turtle armor.

Trivia

  • The tool is named "Drax", a portmanteau of the words "drill" and "axe", because it can perform the actions of both.
  • It was originally called the "Hamdrax", a portmanteau of the words "hammer", "drill", and "axe" and had 85% hammer power in addition to its current abilities. Its hammer ability was removed in 1.2 when hammers were given the ability to create slopes and half-blocks, which would conflict with the Drax's mining functionality. In addition, players often complained that they would accidentally remove background walls when building using the Hamdrax.
  • The original tooltip was "Not to be confused with a hamsaw". Although the Hamsaw (presumably a portmanteau of the words "hammer" and "chainsaw") was never added to the game. The Picksaw and the updated tooltip was added in 1.2.
    • Although Hamsaws do not exist in Terraria, there are tools called Hamaxes. When it was called the "Hamdrax", the Drax functioned as a Hamaxe in addition to its Pickaxe functionality (and still has the axe functionality).
  • Unlike most drills, the Drax has a minimal amount of knockback.
