Events (also known as Invasions) are temporary occasions where varieties of special enemies spawn, most at elevated spawn rates, even near NPCs, and attack players. Some events can occur randomly during gameplay, while others can be triggered via certain summoning items or special circumstances. Events spawn their own unique enemies not seen during ordinary gameplay, which can, in turn, drop unique items that are only obtainable within the event. Some events also bring unique visuals and a unique atmosphere, such as an altered Moon and noticeable shaders applied to the screen. Events also are accompanied by their own special music, adding on to their theme. Depending on the particular event, they may last until a certain time limit is reached, or until a certain number of enemies are defeated.
On the Desktop version and Console version, a progress bar can be seen in the bottom right corner of the screen to indicate how far the player has gone into the event, and how far they are from completing it. It only appears during invasion-style events (Goblin Army, Slime Rain (only if 75/150 slimes are defeated), Old One's Army, Frost Legion, Pirate Invasion, Pumpkin Moon, Frost Moon, Martian Madness , and Lunar Events ) and will not appear during events that are supposed to last a certain amount of time (Blood Moon, Rain, Slime Rain (only if less than 75/150 slimes are killed), Sandstorm, and Solar Eclipse).
Note that invasions seem to require that at least one NPC is nearby; if an invasion's progress bar disappears beyond a certain distance, it may be necessary to place a house near the area. The game only checks horizontal distance to the NPC; you can house them far above or below your arena.
There are currently 14 () / 11 () / 8 ( ) different events and invasions.
Pre-Hardmode[edit | edit source]
The Blood Moon is an event that has a 1 in 9 (11.11%) chance of happening on every night (except new moons) as long as one player in the world has 120 health or more. A message saying: "The Blood Moon is rising..." is displayed when the event starts. During this event, the spawn rate of enemies and the maximum amount of enemies that can be on the screen at any time is increased. Enemies will also spawn near NPCs, even when they normally do not. It can be skipped using an Enchanted Sundial.
Special enemies spawn in addition to the usual enemies of the surface biome the players stands in. The following enemies spawn during a Blood Moon:
|*||Blood Zombies ( ): A stronger variety of a zombie. Increases in movement speed the closer they are to a player.|
|*||Dripplers ( ): Commonly found flying enemies.|
|*||The Groom: An uncommon zombie variant occasionally found during the event.|
|*||The Bride ( ): An uncommon zombie variant occasionally found during the event.|
|*||Corrupt Bunny: Spawns in place of a normal bunny in a Corruption world and is no longer a harmless critter.|
|*||Corrupt Goldfish: Spawns in place of goldfish in bodies of water in Corruption worlds, or can be seen walking if rain is falling.|
|*||Crimtane Bunny ( ): Spawns in place of a normal bunny in a Crimson world and is no longer a harmless critter.|
|*||Crimtane Goldfish ( ): Spawns in place of goldfish in bodies of water in Crimson worlds, or can be seen walking if rain is falling.|
|*||Corrupt Penguin: Spawns in place of a penguin in the Snow Biome in Corruption ( and Crimson) worlds.|
|*||Vicious Penguin ( ): Spawns in place of a penguin in the Snow Biome in Crimson worlds.|
If the world is in Hardmode:
|*||Clown: A potentially very dangerous enemy. Attacks by flinging bombs toward the player.|
The Goblin Army is an event that has a 1 in 3 chance of occurring every dawn if at least one Shadow Orb/Crimson Heart has been destroyed, at least one player has 200 health or more, and there is not a Goblin Invasion already in progress. It can also be summoned using a Goblin Battle Standard. Before the event starts the message: "A Goblin Army is approaching from the [east/west]!" will be displayed 1 (on small and medium worlds)/2 (on large worlds) time(s). When the Goblin Army is about to spawn around the player's spawn point, the message: "A Goblin Army has arrived!" will be displayed.
|*||Goblin Peon: A basic Goblin that can destroy doors and inflicts basic melee damage.|
|*||Goblin Sorcerer: A Caster-type enemy that fires Chaos Balls which can travel through walls. It teleports to a location near the player after firing 3 projectiles.|
|*||Goblin Thief: A quicker Goblin that can also jump higher than the others.|
|*||Goblin Warrior: A Goblin with more health, defense, and damage than others, that takes the most time to kill. It cannot collide with wood platforms in any way.|
|*||Goblin Archer: A Goblin that shoots arrows at the player.|
If the world is in Hardmode:
|*||Goblin Summoner: A Goblin mini-boss that appears during Hardmode, will summon multiple Shadowflame Apparations to attack the player.|
* Although they do not appear in the Goblin Invasion, Goblin Scouts can be found rarely on the outer thirds of the map. They drop Tattered Cloth which is used to make the summoning item for this event.
The "Boss 1" /'Goblin Army' theme plays during a Goblin Army.
When a certain number of enemies are defeated, the message: "The Goblin Army has been defeated!" will display.
After defeating the event for the first time, the Goblin Tinkerer will be able to spawn underground.
Rain[edit | edit source]
The most common event is Rain. Rain can occur in any surface biome, changing the theme music and background, as well as dimming the lighting. Goldfish walk on land, and some different enemies spawn. Once the rain has ended, the effects fade away and the affected biome returns to normal. Rain in a snow biome becomes a blizzard.
|*||Flying Fish: a common flying enemy.|
|*||Umbrella Slime: A slime holding an Umbrella.|
|*||Raincoat Zombie: A zombie variant wearing a rain coat.|
If the world is in Hardmode:
|*||Angry Nimbus: a flying enemy that attacks in a manner similar to that of a Crimson Rod or Nimbus Rod.|
In a Hardmode Hallow:
|*||Rainbow Slime: A slime that spawns on non-Hallowed blocks in Hallow biome.|
|*||Ice Golem: A large, uncommon Hardmode enemy that fires blue lasers, which chill (and more rarely, freeze) players.|
The Slime Rain is an event that has a random chance of occurring in a world, and the event starts when the message "Slime is falling from the sky!" is announced in chat. It can only appear, though, if the player has at least 140 health and 8 defense (except in Expert mode, where it can occur with a significantly decreased chance before meeting the criteria), in which after those criteria are met the random chance of occurring will be put into play. During this time, different variations of slimes fall from the sky constantly until the day or night is over. If the player kills 150 (75 if King Slime was previously defeated) slimes before the event naturally ends, King Slime will spawn. Once the event is over, the message "Slime has stopped falling from the sky." will be displayed in chat.
Many types of slimes spawn including:
|*||Blue Slime: A common slime.|
|*||Green Slime: A common slime.|
|*||Purple Slime: A common slime.|
|*||Pinky: A rare slime who will always drop Pink Gel ( ).|
|*||King Slime: The boss of all slimes, spawns at the end of the event if enough slimes are killed.|
Party[edit | edit source]
The Party is an event that takes place when a Party Center is active. When it occurs, all NPCs will wear a Party Hat (except the Tax Collector, Skeleton Merchant and Old Man). When the event ends, the message "Party time is over!" is announced in chat. The event will end at night (7:30 PM) in the game. A party has a random chance to occur at any dawn, without needing a Party Center near the involved NPCs. When NPCs initiate their own parties, any placed Party Center will activate, and a pink status message will display "Looks like [NPC name] & [NPC name] are throwing a party!" Sometimes only one NPC will throw a party and even three NPCs can throw a party. The pink status message will adapt to however many NPCs are throwing the party.
Sandstorms occur randomly while the player is in a Desert and do not affect other biomes while active. During a sandstorm, the Mighty Wind debuff will be inflicted, pushing creatures afflicted with it in the direction of the wind, and particles will appear in the dusty yellow background. Sandstorms can also occur in Corrupted, Hallowed, or Crimson deserts.
In addition to regular Desert enemies, the following enemies will spawn:
|*||Tomb Crawler: Spawns above ground during sandstorms.|
|*||Dune Splicer: Spawns above ground during sandstorms.|
|*||Sand Elemental: Mini boss of the event.|
In a Hardmode Hallowed Desert:
In a Hardmode Corrupt Desert:
In a Hardmode Crimson Desert:
The Old One's Army is a unique Dungeon Defenders 2 crossover event that can be triggered by placing the Eternia Crystal on the Eternia Crystal Stand. The objective is to protect the Eternia Crystal from waves of enemies seeking to destroy it. If the Crystal is destroyed, the event terminates. If it is kept "alive" until all waves are cleared, the event is defeated.
Both the Crystal and its Stand are purchased from the Tavernkeep NPC for coins. Players are inflicted with the Creative Shock debuff for the duration of the event, which prevents the removal or placement of blocks during the entire event.
Each wave becomes progressively more difficult. When triggered before any Mechanical Bosses have been defeated, the event consists of 5 waves. If triggered after at least one Mechanical Boss is defeated, the event consists of 7 waves. Once Golem has been defeated, the event becomes even more difficult with the boss Betsy spawning in the final wave. Only one Betsy will spawn during each invasion and defeating it will complete the event. The event also contains 2 mini-bosses, the Ogre and the Dark Mage.
The following enemies are exclusive to the event:
|*||Old One's Skeleton|
|*||Etherian Javelin Thrower|
|*||Etherian Goblin Bomber|
|*||Etherian Lightning Bug|
The Frost Legion is an event that functions similarly to the Goblin Army, but it requires an item to start the event, which is only attainable in Hardmode. During Christmas, enemies will drop presents. If the world is in Hardmode, these presents have a 1 in 13 chance of containing a Snow Globe, which is used to spawn the Frost Legion. Before the event starts, the message: "The Frost Legion is approaching from the [east/west]!" will display. When the Frost Legion is about to spawn around the players spawn point, the message: "The Frost Legion has arrived!" will be displayed.
During the event, three different types of unique snowmen will spawn:
|*||Mister Stabby: A Snowman enemy that wields a knife, inflicting melee damage.|
|*||Snowman Gangsta: A Snowman that inflicts ranged damage with a gun.|
|*||Snow Balla: A Snowman that throws snowball projectiles, which form Snow Blocks on impact.|
All of the snowmen drop Snow blocks, technically granting the player a way to obtain infinite amounts of Snow.
When the Frost Legion have arrived, the "Boss 3" theme will play.
When the last wave of snowmen has spawned, the message: "The Frost Legion has been defeated!" will display.
After the Frost Legion has been defeated, the Santa Claus NPC will be available (Only in the Christmas period) and will move into an empty home. The Clothier will also sell the hats of the Snowman Gangsta and Balla.
The Solar Eclipse is a rare Hardmode event that has a 1/20 chance to occur each day, as long as any Mechanical Boss has been defeated. It can also be summoned with a Solar Tablet on the Desktop version and Console version. A Solar Eclipse will be announced at dawn with the message "A Solar Eclipse is happening!". The sun will rise, obscured by the moon, dramatically reducing natural light to a level darker than night time. Normal biome enemy spawns are replaced with special enemies that can spawn near NPCs, and spawn much more frequently and in greater numbers than usual. On the Desktop version and Console version, it can be skipped using an Enchanted Sundial.
The enemies that spawn during a Solar Eclipse at the start of Hardmode are as follows:
|*||Swamp Thing: A swampy creature that can run quickly. Can also drop a Broken Hero Sword ( ).|
|*||Frankenstein: A zombie-like creature that has more health than a normal zombie. Can also drop a Broken Hero Sword ().|
|*||Eyezor: A slow-moving zombie variant with high health. It is capable of firing a laser that somewhat increases in frequency the lower its health is at.|
|*||Vampire: Enemies that spawn as very fast bats that may target the player. They morph into their humanoid form upon coming close to a player. Can drop Broken Bat Wings.|
|*||The Possessed ( ): A fast-moving enemy that can climb on background walls.|
|*||Fritz ( ): Fast-moving enemies that can jump at the player.|
|*||Creature from the Deep ( ): A fighter-type enemy that has the ability to swim and gains increased mobility underwater.|
After all three Mechanical Bosses have been defeated
|*||Reaper: A dark creature that is similar to the wraith. Reapers are best dealt with by standing on a platform over an empty space (Only on the Desktop version and Console version do they only spawn after all three Mechanical Bosses have been defeated. On the Old-gen console version, Mobile version, and , they spawn during any Solar Eclipse). version|
|*||Mothron ( ): A flying enemy that has much more health than any other in the Solar Eclipse. They can fly through blocks and will continually attack the player until killed. It drops a Broken Hero Sword with a 25% chance. It can also drop Mothron Wings and The Eye of Cthulhu yoyo once Plantera has been defeated.|
|*||Baby Mothron ( ): Occasionally hatched from eggs laid by Mothron.|
After Plantera has been defeated:
|*||Butcher: A basic fighter enemy that can attack with a chainsaw.|
|*||Nailhead: A very dangerous enemy with high HP that attacks by firing a spread of nail projectiles.|
|*||Deadly Sphere: An enemy which will phase through walls to get near the player, then turn solid and attack with melee charges.|
|*||Psycho: Spawns in an invisible stealth mode. Deals very high damage if a player gets close while it is in stealth.|
|*||Dr. Man Fly: Attacks by throwing area-of-effect Toxic Flasks.|
During the Solar Eclipse, its own special theme will play for the duration of the event.
The solar eclipse lasts for 1 in-game day. If summoned by the Solar Tablet, it will last for the day's remaining time when used.
The Pirate Invasion is an event that is very similar to the Goblin Army. It can spawn randomly, or be summoned by the use of a Pirate Map, which can be obtained from killing any enemy in the Ocean biome during Hardmode. When activated, a message will warn all players that "Pirates are approaching from the [east/west]!" When the Pirate Invasion has reached the original spawn point, a message will send, saying "The Pirates have arrived!"
During the event, 7 / 6 different enemies themed around a pirate crew will spawn:
|*||Pirate Deckhand: A simple enemy. Very similar to the Goblin Peon.|
|*||Pirate Deadeye: A pirate enemy who carries and shoots a gun.|
|*||Pirate Corsair: Similar to the deckhand, but a little faster with a little more damage. He carries the Cutlass.|
|*||Pirate Crossbower: Similar to the Goblin Archer. She carries a crossbow that seems to resemble one of the repeaters obtainable during hardmode.|
|*||Pirate Captain: The strongest pirate enemy you will encounter. He walks normally until the player enters his range, and then enters attack mode where he mounts a machine gun and starts to rapid fire at the player. Upon being attacked, he will cease to fire, and will not start firing again until the player stops attacking him. He can also fire cannonballs.|
|*||Parrot: A flying enemy that seems to spawn near the Captain.|
|*||Flying Dutchman ( ): A flying mini-boss resembling a pirate ship that appears only after the event reaches 50% progress. It has four cannons with individual health bars that shoot multiple grenades at the player's location. All 4 cannons must be destroyed to defeat the ship. It also spawns many other normal Pirate Invasion enemies.|
Upon defeating the Pirate Invasion, a message will appear stating that "The Pirates have been defeated!".
Defeating the Pirate Invasion unlocks the Pirate NPC, which resembles the Pirate Captain enemy. It will arrive during the day if the world has a suitable housing.
The Pumpkin Moon is a Halloween-themed event that can only be summoned at night with the Pumpkin Moon Medallion. Unlike most other events, the Pumpkin Moon takes place in distinct waves, each one preceded with the message "Wave [#]: [list of the monsters that will be spawning in the wave]". There is a total of 15 waves, which grow harder as the night wears on, culminating in the "Final Wave," which lasts for the remainder of the night. Later waves will contain multiple boss enemies, so it is not recommended for players to summon the Pumpkin Moon until they have end-game weapons and armor and well-reforged accessories. It can be skipped using an Enchanted Sundial , however, it could be considered a waste of resources.
The Pumpkin Moon has seven monsters, in increasing order of difficulty:
|*||Scarecrow: The most basic monster, it slowly walks or hops about.|
|*||Splinterling: A slow but resilient monster that is highly resistant to knockback.|
|*||Hellhound: An extremely fast Wolf-like creature.|
|*||Poltergeist: A floating monster that passes through walls like a Wraith.|
|*||Headless Horseman: Dangerous Enemy; it is similar to the Unicorn, but takes no knockback and is much more dangerous.|
|*||Mourning Wood: The first boss-type monster, it passes through and climbs blocks and shoots volleys of fireball.|
|*||Pumpking: The strongest beast of the Pumpkin Moon, Pumpking is similar to Skeletron and has three modes of attack based on which face it is wearing.|
The Pumpkin Moon used the "Eclipse" music track but got its own in 22.214.171.124. Though there are no rewards for surviving the event, most (if not all) of the enemies can drop unique items, including Spooky Wood and equipment like the Spooky Hook and Raven Staff.
The Frost Moon is a Christmas-themed event similar to the Pumpkin Moon that can only be summoned at night with the Naughty Present. It uses the same wave system as the Pumpkin Moon, with each new wave starting with the message "Wave [#]: [list of the monsters that will be spawning in the wave]". The Frost Moon also has an additional five "bonus waves" after the "Final Wave", making the max wave count to 20. Enemies have similar behavior to Pumpkin Moon counterparts, but are tougher, making this event the hardest on the Mobile and versions. On the Desktop and Console versions, this event has been beaten by the Martian Madness and Lunar Events as of 126.96.36.199. It can be skipped using an Enchanted Sundial, however, it would be considered a waste of resources.
It has 11 types of enemies:
|*||Gingerbread Man: Basic enemy found in the early waves.|
|*||Zombie Elf: Another fighter-type enemy.|
|*||Elf Archer: Dangerous ranged enemies that shoot flaming arrows.|
|*||Nutcracker: Powerful enemies that come in two variants.|
|*||Yeti: Similar to Krampus and Nutcrackers, but stronger.|
|*||Elf Copter: Flying, bullet-shooting enemies, with high damage.|
|*||Krampus: Stronger version of Nutcrackers.|
|*||Flocko: Fly at the player at high speed, making them dangerous enemies.|
|*||Everscream: The first boss found during the Frost Moon, which shoot pine needles and tree decorations at the player. Can get through walls to reach the player.|
|*||Santa-NK1: The second boss of this event, that shoots bullets, rockets and presents.|
|*||Ice Queen: The final boss, the strongest of the event. It's very evasive, and has attacks which are hard to dodge.|
Its own special theme will play during the event.
The Martian Madness event is a post-Golem event. It is unique from the others in that in order to start it you must find a Martian Probe randomly in the outer parts of the surface and space levels of the world and move into its light. Once you're discovered by a Martian Probe, it will float away and, if not destroyed by the time it leaves the screen, it will initiate the Martian Madness event, displaying the message "Martians are invading!". If you do not wish to unintentionally begin the event, it is recommended to destroy the Probe immediately. The Martian Madness event has enemies as follows:
|*||Martian Saucer: A UFO that shoots a powerful beam, along with lasers. Can drop strong weapons for each class, including a Mount.|
|*||Scutlix: A fast-moving creature with a mounted Scutlix Gunner, both of which attack independently.|
|*||Martian Walker: A large, swift enemy that rapidly fires lasers.|
|*||Martian Drone: A flying enemy that suicide-bombs the player, scattering harmful sparks on the ground.|
|*||Tesla Turret: A stationary enemy that fires lasers that inflict Electrified.|
|*||Gigazapper: A Martian using a melee weapon that inflicts Electrified.|
|*||Martian Engineer: A Martian that occasionally plants Tesla Turrets.|
|*||Martian Officer: A Martian protected by a Bubble Shield that must be depleted before it can be harmed.|
|*||Ray Gunner: A Martian that fires mundane lasers.|
|*||Gray Grunt: A Martian with no unusual abilities.|
|*||Brain Scrambler: A Martian that fires confusion-inducing lasers.|
The Martian Madness event has its own theme that it plays during the duration of the event.
Once the last wave of Martians has spawned and been defeated, a message will appear stating that "The Martians have been defeated!".
The Lunar Events start after defeating the Lunatic Cultist boss. The message saying "Celestial creatures are invading!" indicates the beginning of the events. This is a unique event that spawns four different pillars, spread evenly across your world. These pillars spawn similarly-colored enemies that invade your world. There are four different pillars: the Solar Pillar, the Vortex Pillar, the Nebula Pillar, and the Stardust Pillar. All of them drop shards, which are used to craft endgame gear. Each has the same amount of health and is surrounded with a protective barrier. The Moon Lord will spawn around 1 minute, or 1 in-game hour after the completion of this event.
In Solar area:
|*||Solar Pillar: Source of the Solar area. It shoots fireballs that rain down in the general area. Drops Solar Fragments. The Melee based pillar.|
|*||Selenian: Ground humanoid enemy that frequently rolls up into a ball and spins in the air, reflecting many projectiles directly back at the player.|
|*||Drakanian: Ground humanoid enemy that does high damage and charges at the player with a flaming spear.|
|*||Corite: Enemies that float around your character, occasionally charging at you. Can phase through blocks.|
|*||Sroller: A slow moving enemy, that will occasionally attack by curling into a ball and flinging itself at you. They bounce off of walls when spinning.|
|*||Crawltipede: Enemies that fly around in the air. Only hostile when the player(s) is/are in the air. Very dangerous and can only be attacked from tail orb.|
|*||Drakomire: A Dangerous enemy that fires solar flares at the player if they're a certain distance away.|
|*||Drakomire Rider: A combination of both the Drakomire and the Drakanian.|
In Vortex area:
|*||Vortex Pillar: Source of the Vortex area. It will attack by creating lightning bolts above you. Drops Vortex Fragments. The Ranger based pillar.|
|*||Vortexian: A high damage humanoid enemy that summons a lightning portal on death.|
|*||Alien Queen: A bigger version of the Alien Hornets, that have more offense and defense. They fire stingers at you, which have a chance to apply the Distorted debuff, causing your gravity to be distorted.|
|*||Alien Hornet: Enemies that will spawn through portals above your character. Similarly to Hornets, they fly around your character hitting you. Doesn't fire stingers.|
|*||Alien Larva: Spawns at the death point of an Alien Queen. Eventually grow into Alien Hornets.|
|*||Storm Diver: A humanoid range enemy that wields a gun that looks similar to a Vortex Beater and fires vortex lasers at the player, dealing massive damage. Can also hover to match the player's horizontal position.|
In a Nebula area:
|*||Nebula Pillar: Source of the Nebula area. Does not have an "attack," unlike the others. Drops Nebula Fragments. The Mage based pillar.|
|*||Nebula Floater: Enemies that fly around near your character, shooting its projectiles at you. Similar to Flow Invader. Teleports when damaged.|
|*||Brain Suckler: Enemies that will fly towards your character through walls, and latch onto you, inflicting the Obstructed debuff. Slowly deal damage.|
|*||Predictor: A dangerous humanoid enemy that summons star-like turrets that launch to the player location, dealing massive damage.|
|*||Evolution Beast: A ground enemy that fires slow nebula spheres that home in on the player, dealing high damage.|
In a Stardust area:
|*||Stardust Pillar: The source of the Stardust area. It will attack by summoning white portals that spawn nonground enemies. Drops Stardust Fragments. The Summoner based pillar.|
|*||Star Cell: Average speed flying enemies. When killed it splits into smaller Star Cells, and when given enough time, those become bigger Star Cells.|
|*||Flow Invader: Flies around, firing it's minions at you. When killed, it quickly fires all remaining minions at you.|
|*||Twinkle Popper: Small, crawling enemies. They create smaller versions called Twinkles to attack the player.|
|*||Milkyway Weaver: Giant worm-like creatures, that can burrow, but still fly in the air when necessary. Can only be attacked in the head.|
|*||Stargazer: A ground humanoid enemy. It has a chance to fire a mega laser at you.|
After all Pillars are defeated:
|*||Moon Lord: Currently Terraria's final boss. Has three eyes that need to be defeated before its core is revealed. The top eye fires a Phantasmal Deathray that inflicts massive damage, and the hands can spawn Phantasmal Spheres and Eyes which can easily overwhelm a player. "Killing" an eye turns it into its invincible true form. Killing the core will, in turn, kill the Moon Lord. Drops much of the end-game loot.|
