The Gladius is a shortsword dropped by Hoplites with a 5*1/20 (5%) chance. It is one of the strongest shortswords in the game, surpassing the highest pre-Hardmode tier ore-based shortswords (Platinum Shortsword and Gold Shortsword).

Unlike other shortswords, it attacks three times in quick succession per use, with slightly varying angles with each stab.

Its best modifier is Legendary.

Trivia

• The Gladius can be considered the pre-Hardmode version of the Starlight, due to its similar attack style.
• The tooltip is a reference to the 2000 epic historical drama movie Gladiator.
• Gladius is Latin for sword, and was commonly used by Roman foot soldiers and gladiators.
• The Gladius was not actually used by Greek Hoplites, rather it was used by roman legionaries
