Rewards

Can we make a list of possible rewards? I'll share what I got.--81.178.136.231 20:25, 10 May 2014 (UTC)

Fishron is a new boss?

The Angler mentions Fishron in one of his quotes. maybe Fishron is a new boss? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 22:30, 11 May 2014‎ (UTC) (talkcontribs) at 68.14.131.9

Indeed it is! NoseOfCthulhu (talk) 04:03, 12 May 2014 (UTC)

Golden Fishing Rod

I doubt the Golden Fishing Rod is actually a reference to Animal Crossing. It's far too obscure. Now, if it actually did resemble the Gold Fishing Rod in Animal Crossing, then I'd say it is. Sodapone (talk) 22:09, 17 May 2014 (UTC)

I got a 2nd Golden Fishing Rod. Might be after completing 100 quest. It is the same world and same character. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 77.176.38.181 at 20:48, 11 June 2014 (UTC)

Angler Set

Just wanted to say, that the angler pieces only being given after the 20th 30th and 40th quests are not true, I have done about 15-20 quests and gotten all 3 pieces. WelchDrew (talk) 05:59, 25 May 2014 (UTC)

Are you absolutely sure you didn't do more than that? The game code seems to clearly constrain those items to the 20th, 30th, and 40th quests. There's no random allowance for those items under any conditions, as far as I can tell -- and in practice I got them at those milestones. Equazcion (talk) 06:41, 25 May 2014 (UTC)
PS. The # of finished quests may be tied to the player data rather than the world data, so if you had completed quests with the same player in different worlds prior, that could maybe explain the apparent discrepancy. Equazcion (talk) 06:44, 25 May 2014 (UTC)
I did do Yrimir's trick with using multiple worlds, but I have not done anywhere near 40 quests and I have all the pieces, most of the quests I have done though were on one world. I have done about 5 or so quests with the multiple world trick and the rest on a single hardmode world. It was on 1.2.4 though not 1.2.4.1, I am not sure if maybe it was a bug they fixed. WelchDrew (talk) 06:49, 25 May 2014 (UTC)
I'm not sure what caused this either. But I get the feeling your experience is the exception rather than the rule, whether it's caused by a bug or some other circumstance. Being that we know the intended and usual behavior, the info should probably go back on the page. Equazcion (talk) 06:57, 25 May 2014 (UTC)
I cannot agree, this is not the first time part of the code screwed up(I remember the dungeon guardian, was supposed to do 1000 damage back in earlier 1.2 versions, but was bugged to do 9999 damage, which they did fix), you can't rely on the code for everything. Whatever, I am done with you, re-add your completely false info to the wiki, see if I care, its false and will always be false until Re-Logic gets off their hind ends and fixes it, maybe in 1.3. I am done with you now. WelchDrew (talk) 07:17, 25 May 2014 (UTC)
I'm open to the possibility that the code has screwed up, and have added a bug describing your experience, along with the original angler armor info. Equazcion (talk) 07:40, 25 May 2014 (UTC)
Have only completed 24 Angler Quests and already have all three pieces of the Angler Gear. I got the last piece around quest 20~ give or take. I don't think this is a bug and should be changed to reflect such. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.51.48.159 at 07:28, 3 July 2015 (UTC)

Angler's quest

I made this picture : http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/727488Fishing.gif but I don't know where I can place it... Lightg4 (talk) 20:07, 8 June 2014 (UTC)

It's a nice image, though I'm likewise not quite sure where it'd fit in. In most cases a table with item links and similar would probably be more convenient. Did you have something special in mind when you made it? Also, is the info on it gained from personal game experience or somewhere else? NoseOfCthulhu (talk) 00:47, 10 June 2014 (UTC)
I used this page : Angler#quest. I made it to help the player who search some quest fish Lightg4 (talk) 11:12, 10 June 2014 (UTC)
Apparently there has been some issues (see Talk:Fishing#Fishing_Corrections) with determining where fish can be caught, meaning your image could include errors. As mentioned it would also probably be best to use a table - here's an example:
X Hallow Corruption Crimson
Surface Pixiefish Infected Scabbardfish Bloody Manowar
I'm however if it would actually help players. An overview like this would be useful if the player could choose what fish to catch, but as that is not the case the only info needed is where the fish can be caught - something the list on Angler#quest already provides.
For now I'll place it on the Angler page as a link. If you'd like it uploaded on this wiki you can use the upload function. NoseOfCthulhu (talk) 22:41, 10 June 2014 (UTC)
I used a picture because we can easily download that... And it is easier to make a picture than a table...Lightg4 (talk) 12:31, 12 June 2014 (UTC)
I'd not say that. Making the table is much easier since the formatting, alignment, and such is all done for you. As for downloading, well, people won't have to download it very often, and if you want to download you can always screenshot or download the entire page. -Xolroc (talk) 12:42, 12 June 2014 (UTC)
Ah well, as stated it's now present on the Angler page as a link. Table making may also offer a challenge to people with no experience in it. If anyone finds downloading the image to be the easiest solution, then good for them. NoseOfCthulhu (talk) 16:38, 12 June 2014 (UTC)

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Why my picture is removed?Lightg4 (talk) 10:42, 18 January 2015 (UTC)

Apparently it's been seven months since it was added, and in that time the page has gone through a lot of revisions. Wikis are run by consensus, so if an image is added but removed without contest, it's typically because editors implicitly agreed that it didn't fit. Someone likely decided that the information would be better conveyed in some other way or something- at the moment Angler/Quests is transcluded onto the page to detail the fish the Angler requests and the means to obtain them, and there have been no complaints about it being difficult to read or unwieldy. People who objected to this change would've said something.
To be honest, if an image like this were necessary, it'd be better off as a table. Tables can dynamically handle spacing, deal with text more interactively and allow quick edits when values or sprites change with updates, but I'd say even that's not needed- the amount of null space and redundant entries in that image only serves to illustrate that a list of the fish that details where they can be obtained is a cleaner and more efficient means of displaying this information. I'm actually interested to see a table like this being put together for all available fish types though. Gearzein (talk) 11:13, 18 January 2015 (UTC)
With a picture, we can see instantly where the fish is, and we don't have to search on a table... But it's by opinion... PS : a new picture is available for the interested : http://image.noelshack.com/fichiers/2015/03/1421580691-fishing-quest.pngLightg4 (talk) 11:32, 18 January 2015 (UTC)
In the example table posted in the initial discussion seven months ago, the resulting layout and appearance is nearly identical, save for it being much neater and matching the visual style of the wiki rather than an offsite image. What's more is that if the sprites changed, the image would have to be redone, whereas a table would pull sprites from images used across the wiki and would essentially be updated automatically. This is true for any other changes made to the chart- the fact that cavern and underworld catches are identical but misleadingly ordered differently, or the combination of the mutually exclusive corruption and crimson catches, come to mind.
The argument for either isn't particularly strong in any case. Image or table, even if a chart were to be added, I doubt it'd be this one. Gearzein (talk) 13:29, 18 January 2015 (UTC)
Also, as NoseOfCthulhu stated a while ago, since you can't choose which angler quest fish to shoot for when you like, this kind of chart isn't very useful. It's not like you can just be in a particular area and look up which quest fish happen to be available there. You generally need to find out which fish the Angler wants you to find first, so the only type of chart that's of use is one that lets you search for his quote and then presents the fish and biome attached to it, so that you can then go there to try and get it (which is the chart we already have). Fishing Tourism

Is it possible to receive a quest in one world and then catch the required fish in another? --93.92.177.77 10:20, 1 August 2014 (UTC)

Generally no. The Angler tells you what the current quest is for the world you're in at the time. Other Worlds will have their own quests set. The current quest in two worlds might randomly be the same at times, but that would only happen rarely.
Although, you can go to other worlds and fulfill their separate quests, if you're just trying to get your quest count up. You don't take quests with you from world to world, but you do take your quest count with you from world to world. If you want to get the rewards that come from your 10th, 20th, 30th quest etc, it could be useful to keep going to other worlds and completing quests in those, instead of having to wait another day for each new quest. Kill to Refresh?

If you kill the Angler, does it make a new quest if you've already done one? If you haven't, does it give you a new one? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.220.76.126 at 05:12, 18 August 2014 (UTC)

Can't Accept Quests

I click on the quest button, but all it does is make a clicky noise and nothing happens. Right and left clicking do nothing, but only the left click makes a noise. Quest fish too early, and Invisible Angler

So I was fishing in a little spot near my home, I've caught old shoes, seaweed, bass, I've even caught a couple of Iron Crates... In succession. (My luck is a weird thing...) Back on the matter, I was fishing along, when all of a sudden, I caught an Angelfish! I thought: Awesome! An Amber fish! I bet it sells for a ton. So I look at it, and it says it's a quest fish... Alright time to find the Angler. I think this would also be a good place to mention that at first, I didn't find the Angler. I had already been to the other end of the map and I didn't find him there. Naturally, I figured he should be on the other shore. When I got there, all I found was the ocean, a shark, a pink jellyfish, and four goblin scouts. I'd even looked in and on the water. I left for a minute, and came back looking for more Goblin Scouts. I found him when I got back there. Otatsuke Tsuda (talk) 00:24, 23 May 2015 (UTC)

You can find quest fish even if you haven't found the angler, it's just uncommon unless you know what you're looking for. While it may seem strange, it's not a glitch.
As for the Angler's spawning, he spawns with the same conditions as monsters, if you haven't woken him up yet. On the beach he'll always spawn in place of a monster, otherwise he has a lower chance of spawning in (on) the water, if it's shallow enough. --KM100 (talk) 00:36, 23 May 2015 (UTC)

Quest rewards after 150th

The two bullet points that mention the reward odds starting at the 150th quest seem to contradict each other. Do we know which one is true? At 150, do the reward odds jump to 6.67x or back down to 1x? --Adaniel87 (talk) 19:21, 6 September 2015 (UTC)

Basically it's bugged, 6.67x (1/0.15) is the max rate which is reached at 150 but at 151 the bug strikes and it permanently resets to 1, and the odds don't 'jump' (the bug at quest 151 aside) it's gradual linear increasing every single quest with 3 different gradients.
The modifier is applied as a multiplier that starts at 1, reaches 0.5 (2x) at 50, 0.25 (4x) at 100, and 0.15 (6.67x) at 150. The 1st 50 quests decrease the multiplier by 0.01 each, the next 50 (51-100) by 0.005 each, and the 3rd 50 (101-150) by 0.002 each. However, there's no case for >150, so the multiplier defaults to 1. - 86.159.158.39 23:07, 6 September 2015 (UTC)

Fisherman's Pocket Guide

The wiki says that the Fisherman's Pocket Guide is a 1/40 drop. Are we certain that that's accurate? My friend and I are both looking for it as the last cell phone ingredient, and can't seem to find it. I've completed 79 quests and my friend has completed 74. He says he has five sextants, and multiple weather radios. I have multiple of at least one of them. He plays on Easycore and I play on Mediumcore. Does that make a difference? Superstars111 (talk) 21:59, 23 November 2015 (UTC)

Random is random; there's no guarantee you'll get it from any quest. Player difficulty doesn't matter either, you'll just have to keep trying until you get one. –KM100 (talk) 22:09, 23 November 2015 (UTC)
Random is random, but the odds do affect the situation. I managed to get one after about 80 quests. My friend still hasn't gotten one. For me, there was a 1/80 drop rate. Add my friend to the equation, and it's 1/160. I'm far more likely to get, say, Butterfly Dust from a Moth (50% drop rate) than I am to get something from the Angler as a quest reward. While there's technically no way to guarantee getting Butterfly Dust from a Moth, statistically speaking, you have a 1/2 chance, and if you kill enough, you should get some. In the same way, it took me quite a while of farming Mothrons to get the Broken Hero Swords that I needed, but statistically speaking, it wasn't all that far off.
Basically, I know that 1/40 isn't an exact number, but it isn't even close to what my friend and I have experienced, and we're wondering how those numbers are determined, and how accurate they are in general, especially since the other two Cell Phone ingredients that he gives out have the same numbers attached to them and we're swimming in those items. Superstars111 (talk) 01:10, 25 November 2015 (UTC)
Mathematically, it's impossible for the odds to affect the outcome, because they're just an estimate extrapolated from the equation used to generate the items. The belief that multiple losses will eventually result in a win because the odds seem to indicate that numbers will naturally balance out is a common misconception, but 1/40 doesn't guarantee a drop every 40 tries, or even every 400, and these odds don't just change from person to person or even between rolls. Look at the other example you provided, even- given an item with an identical drop rate and the same number of quests, your friend has five sextants out of less than 80 tries, which is around one for every sixteen rolls. While these results seem anomalous when looked at individually, these outliers end up averaging out to around 1/40 between all users.
None of this is to imply that the information on the wiki is guesswork, of course. Barring a misinterpretation of the code, 1/40 is an exact statistical statement, because these items are given a 2.5% chance to appear when this loot is rolled for. This chance never increases or decreases- statistically, it's possible that it literally never occurs for a given user. Gearzein (talk) 02:47, 25 November 2015 (UTC)

Asking question about probabilities of quest items

I either do not understand the increasing chance of the questing or there is something wrong: As a quest reward I get an item or coin (and maybe bait). For the first 50 quest I have a 6/7 (or more precise 121/140) chance to get an item (just adding up the probabilities for each item, leaving the Hardmode aside), after the 50th quest the chances of all items increases by 2. But than the chances to get an item are 12/7 which makes no sense except i get sometimes 2 items. Or arguing from the other side if I increase the chance of all probabilities nothing changes. Am I missing a point? Flisch42 (talk) 12:58, 26 January 2016 (UTC)

It seems the drop rates changed a lot in 1.3.0.1 and haven't been updated yet. That being said the drop rates were never 100% accurate. For example the Fish Hook does not drop with 1 in 60 chance, but 0.9875 in 60 chance (or 79 in 4800 chance)... that is if it isn't the 5th, 10th, 15th, 20th or 30th quest as they already have fixed loot. Also assuming you aren't playing in hardmode having more than 10 or 25 quest finished or more than 75 quests in any mode as the loot pool changes again. And that is without probability increase from completing multiple quests. In other words, the numbers displayed are estimates rather than being exact, as that would simply result in a mess. I'm going to update the drop chances (still not 100% accurate to prevent it from being a mess), but it was/is mainly the potions/decoration the decreased in chance. --0icke0 (talk) 23:53, 26 January 2016 (UTC)
The User:SDGlyph has created a User:SDGlyph/Sandbox/AnglerQuestRewards where the probabilities for the rewards are given, depending on completed quests. Has anyone checked these numbers or are they realistic? Because I would like to see them in the wiki. Maybe not directly on the angler page but as a link not sure yet. I will check the code if nobody has already done it, but that will probably take some time. (On a side note: A reference to the code (class/method) would be nice) Flisch42 (talk) 21:46, 31 August 2016 (UTC)
I'd intended to link that table as Angler/Quest_Rewards or some such, but got distracted... The probs given should all be correct - they're drawn directly from the source code and I have a big ol' Excel table calculating all the cumulative probabilities for each reward; they're not a flat list of probabilities, but rather a sequence of dice rolls for each reward in turn with the number of quests adding a modifier to each roll. The overall probabilities therefore have to be multiplied out for each possible number, which is a pain...
Also needs a separate Hardmode listing. I'll finish the table up and link it shortly! SDGlyph (talk) 22:34, 31 August 2016 (UTC)
The calculations appear to be in Player.cs, under GetAnglerReward() – Ferretwings (talk) 23:19, 31 August 2016 (UTC)
Ok, I made my own list and I have slightly different numbers, so it is time to embarrass myself. Here is my list including explanation. One of us is off, I do not know who, but i do not see an error in my list, but I am not the best at probabilities. btw thanks for the direction in the code. Achievement Bug

The achievements for the angler are hideously broken. It can display you having ~50 fish for the highest one, but for some reason the ones that you would have unlocked by that point have lower scores, and a re not unlocked. References in quotes

If sufficient evidence can be found that the quote, "Oh! Thanks for the fish I asked for, now scram!" is in fact a reference to the game by the same name, I'll gladly relent to that information being added. However, as it stands, the likelihood of that is very low. The contents of the game scram have, as far as I can tell, no connections at all to the Angler NPC or Terraria in general for that matter. On the other end, other quotes of the Angler involve him thanking you in a rude way and telling you to go away. This leads me to believe that the quote is not a reference, and is simply a similar meaning to the quotes, "You make a great errand monkey! Now go away!" and, "Woah?! You actually did what I asked, and survived! Nice, hand it over and beat it!"

Infinite (?) quests

It seems, at the moment, that you can get as many quests as you want during one day. Completing one, then exiting the world and reloading it causes a new quest appear. Is this a common bug or does it have something to do with my specific game?

Fishing: All tundra corrupted on my map

I get a quest to catch the Pengfish in the tundra biome. However, all tundra is corrupted in my small map. I switch to a larger map, but the quest fish has not been caught after trying at least three different times when the quest was given on different occasions. Is it impossible for me to now complete this quest for the Pengfish? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 73.68.168.148 at 18:39, 30 November 2019 (UTC)

Yes, Pengfish cannot be caught in a Snow biome that overlaps with Corruption, Crimson, or Hallow. The same applies to the Mutant Flinxfin and Tundra Trout, by the way. All of them can still be caught in a pure Snow biome at their respective altitude. Keep in mind having a quest fish in the inventory prevents you from catching it. --Rye Greenwood (talk) 03:22, 1 December 2019 (UTC)
Relevant followup question, what about Desert? I've repeatedly gotten the Scorpio Fish quest, but my only natural desert was completely hallowed. The fact that hallowed desert is somewhat of a seperate biome and can still spawn desert events suggests it can be done, and even if not the page states that Oasis fishing spawns take priority over all other overlapping biomes. All that said, I've tried for hours every time I got the quest and turned up nothing. Is this the same situation? Will I have to make an artificial desert? If so I think both of these facts should be more clearly conveyed in the article. --Wrpen (talk) 00:49, 27 May 2020 (UTC)

Death animation

This isn't really an issue and more of a nitpick but the article states that showing children getting killed would result in an AO rating by the ESRB when this has been disproven by games such as South Park: The Stick of Truth and The Last of Us (with the latter having much more realistic models of human characters than Terraria). One could argue that standards have changed but both of these came out before the Angler was added and the ESRB hasn't become more sensitive to violence since that point. An M rating could still limit people accessing the game to some degree, though, so the point remains valid, I just find the rating specified to be somewhat inexact.
