TF2 Reference[]

Okay, since we're having a mini-war about whether or not the Flare Gun is a TF2 reference, let's discuss it here.

Here's my argument as to why the Flare Gun isn't a reference:

  • TF2 Flare Guns have a very slow firing speed (about 1.5 seconds in between shots.)
  • TF2 Flares do not pierce enemies.
  • TF2 Flares deal much more damage (30 damage, instead of 1.)
  • TF2 Flares score critical hits on burning enemies.
  • TF2 Flares dissipate upon hitting a solid object or enemy.
  • TF2's Flare Gun is either all red with some black accents or all blue with black accents, depending on the team the wielder is on. Terraria's is Yellow with brown accents.

And here's the similarities:

  • Both flare guns set enemies on fire.
  • Terraria flares are available in red and blue (team colours for TF2.)

Hm, seems a little unbalanced, right? Just saying, it's extremely unlikely that it's a reference. Sodapone (talk) 00:21, 21 May 2014 (UTC)

There's no reason to say it's a reference to TF2 specifically. Flare guns in games are going to be similar to each other since they are all references to... wait for it... flare guns! Yes, the flare gun is an actual real-life gizmo that shoots things that make firey light. This is not a coincidence, and the manufacturers of these devices are not referencing TF2 either. Yes there are other games that feature flare guns. No, that does not mean they are referencing each other. Equazcion (talk) 00:37, 21 May 2014 (UTC)

My argument as to why it isn't a reference:

  • A quick visit to wikipedia shows a Flare gun very similar to the in-game sprite.
  • The wikipedia article also states that flare guns are signalling tools, but can be used as a weapons when no other weapon is available.
  • Flares can be colored using pyrotechnic colorants; resulting colors include red and blue.

Conclusion, I think we all agree that this item is not a TF2 reference. OdnHarfagre (talk) 00:53, 21 May 2014 (UTC)
