Throwing weapons are generally single-use damage-dealing items. Throwing weapons stack in a player's inventory, with one unit being removed from the stack every time it is used to attack, leaving the slot empty when the last has been used. Many throwing weapons are retrievable after being used.

On the Old-gen console version Old-gen console version, Windows Phone version Windows Phone version, and Nintendo 3DSNintendo 3DS version version, throwing weapons deal ranged damage, and receive bonuses from items and effects that improve ranged damage, though they do not count as any particular type of ammunition for the purposes of Shroomite armor or similar effects.

On the PC version PC version, Console version Console version, Mobile version Mobile version, Old Chinese version Old Chinese version, tModLoader version tModLoader version, and tModLoader 1 tModLoader 1.3-Legacy version, throwing weapons are a unique damage type, featuring two weapons that deal throwing damage and two sets of armor that improve the stats of throwing weapons. As a result, in this version, throwing weapons do not receive most ranged bonuses. They are still affected by ammo reservation effects and the Frost armor's set bonus.

All throwing weapons are available prior to Hardmode. After this point, they are largely obsolete, though some are replaced by magic and melee weapons that operate in the same ways without being exhaustible.

It should be noted that both Thrown Water and explosives are thrown consumable weapons, however they do not deal throwing damage, nor are they affected by buffs, accessories, or any other factors.

The following armor sets provide the player specific bonuses to the use of throwing weapons. No such items exist on the Old-gen console version Old-gen console version, Windows Phone version Windows Phone version, and Nintendo 3DSNintendo 3DS version version, though items that increase the stats of ranged weapons fill this same purpose there.
