Question

What is a steward? I saw it in your profile and just wondered what type of right a steward had. I know what a steward in real life is, just wondered what it is here on Gamepedia. LordofEditing =(Talk)= 08:09, 10 December 2016 (UTC)

I don't think it does anything on Gamepedia (at least not yet).
Steward is a rank that usually means a person has bureaucrat abilities (admin + assign user rights) on not just one but a whole family of related wikis. Stewards at Wikimedia have bureaucrat powers at Wikipedia, Wiktionary, WikiQuote, and several others.
Gamepedia uses MediaWiki, the same wiki software developed for Wikipedia etc, and steward is a built-in rank in that software -- only Gamepedia doesn't seem to have made it actually do anything yet, even though I was able to assign it to myself. Equazcion (talk) 08:46, 10 Dec 2016 (UTC)

Rules grammatical errors

Hey, Equazcion, I found 6 grammatical errors on the Rules page.

  • 5. and 6. 5 - In Terraria Wiki:Rules#Guides, first bullet point, add "the" before "individual". 6 - third bullet point, remove the comma after "linked," and before "unless".

Okay well, those are all American English proper grammar corrections. Also, in #3 "Information that is not backed up by an official statement should be treated as rumor and labeled as such." I definetly think there should be an "a" before "rumor".TOTORO01 (talk) 18:24, 13 December 2016 (UTC)

The word "rumor" can be used in a manner similar to "speculation" -- eg. "What he's saying is speculation." "A speculation," just like "a rumor," would connote a slightly different meaning.
"Information" is a "non-count" noun, which can be singular or plural, depending on the context. In this case, saying "information ... should be treated as a rumor" wouldn't satisfy plural/singular agreement, "information" being plural and "a rumor" being singular. A couple of your grammar corrections above suffer from this issue, like "the" before "use" in your second bullet.
Commas go where pauses would occur in speech, which usually happens when a complete clause is followed by a condition. "We could take the car to the amusement park, if your sister isn't using it today." Those commas are fine, and advisable after a long clause. Your other suggestions above regard that comma issue. "If this condition is met, then something will occur." vs "Something will occur if this condition is met" These two sentences have the same meaning, but are structured differently. Short if then clauses like my first example need the comma, but the second does not. This is probably why it sounds/looks incorrect.
use of 'noun' is the subject of a declarative sentence, the is implied and not necessary.

For the comma corrections: A complex sentence includes one independent clause and at least one dependent clause. When the dependent clause comes first, it is an introductory clause followed by a comma. When it follows the independent clause, no comma is needed. A dependent clause often begins with a dependent marker word, such as after, as if, because, even though, since, unless, or when.
For the determiner corrections (minus the "rumor" as both would work): An article (a, an, or the) is a type of determiner. Possessive adjectives (my, his, our), possessive nouns (Joe’s, mother’s), and quantifiers (each, every) are also determiners. Single countable nouns usually require a determiner.

When the condition comes second the comma is optional, depending. That's why I said "long clause" above. In this case: "Trivia should not generally describe a game element's function, nor tips on using or dealing with it, unless..." That condition is used to determine whether the name is an IP address. If the first character is "not an illegal number" (meaning it is a numerical digit) then the name is likely an IP address and the script should go ahead with execution. Suggestion

Wanted Pages

Why do you keep the talk pages on the wanted pages list? I'm fine with you deleting the comments, but just curious why. --Tymon80 (talk) 19:50, 25 December 2016 (UTC)

The wanted page list is automatically generated and lists all red links that appear anywhere on the wiki (a link to a page that doesn't exist is considered a "wanted page"). All navigation templates are going to have red links to their own talk pages, when their talk pages don't yet exist. Getting them out of the wanted page list by creating blank ones isn't necessary and could cause some confusion. Equazcion (talk) 19:54, 25 Dec 2016 (UTC)

I don't know offhand. I took a quick look at the infobox code and most of the calls to "(placed)" images only occur if they are first determined to exist. Learning about wiki code

Hi Equazcion,

I'm trying to learn more about how the gamepedia wikis work to help in the blockhood wiki. I was looking at the source code for the main page (of the terraria wiki) and found by example this:

You can define them in MediaWiki:Hydra.css, or in MediaWiki:Common.css (common.css applies changes to all skins rather than just Hydra).
Just because a div has an id= or a class= doesn't mean that class or ID necessarily has styles defined anywhere yet. Boxes on Gamepedia's main pages usually have IDs by default, just for organization purposes, ie. to make the code more readable. Classes and IDs can also sometimes be present primarily for use by Javascript (but probably not in this case).
You could define styles that would apply to your div by adding a definition to Hydra.css, like this:
#mf-game {
   color:green;
   font-size:28px;
}
If mf-game were a class instead of an ID (<div class="mf-game">), you would add this instead:
.mf-game {
   color:green;
   font-size:28px;
}
A dot means a class, and a number sign means an ID. PS. The only major difference between classes and IDs is that IDs have to be unique, while multiple elements can have the same class, so they can all be styled at once. It should be fine I think, but I think you should post this proposal at Terraria Wiki:Community noticeboard first, just to see if anyone else has thoughts on it. The only concern I could see is too many banners, like, this would stack under the [platform]-only banners, and things might look crowded. The welcome page you tried to create is unnecessary, as this wiki already has a welcome page here: Terraria Wiki. Once you've created a user account, you will be able to create user pages, which you can use to store notes or whatever you want. User pages can also be used to play around with html and wiki code, wiki tables, image formatting, or whatever. I highly encourage you to create a user account. You'll also be able to set up your own Talk page, where you can ask questions, and we can ask questions of you. Question 2

Hi Equazcion, I'm removed from wiki guardian and sysop (I have this 2 ranks at the same time) on the polish terraria wiki by inactivity and I decided to back to active edits on that wiki, so I have question. There are possibility to back to this user groups? So far I have alone with managing and admin edits, and that did't change, and and would rather not change, so I have also second question. That sysops and bureaucrats should be degraded for inactivity? Sorry If my English is bad, I'm from Poland. P.S. To answer your second question, admins and bureaucrats can be demoted if it doesn't seem like they're interested anymore. There's no rule about that, so it's handled on a case-by-case basis. I know this is Equazcion's talk page, but I think I may know a solution. If you are able to buy a teleporter, you could possibly wire it up through the temple. My Signature

I just had two more questions about the signature now that I'm finished tweaking it and shortening it: Is my signature still within guidelines in terms of display? It links to User:Awesome diamonds, but displays as Awesome_Diamonds. It says on the guidelines page that for User:BillSimpson, even BillySimpson is unacceptable.

Also, is the 256 character limit an in-code limit or visual limit (e.g. in code the sig is 300 characters but visibly it's 100). Thanks again for looking into this!

When I began using DPL just now, it gave me this error:

Ukrainian Wiki

Before we go ahead with creating a new language wiki, Gamepedia likes to see that there's a commitment to the translations first. The best thing to do is to create translations for all the pages linked on the main page. Once that's done we can create the separate language wiki for Ukrainian.
When you do this, don't worry about infobox templates (those would need re-writing for /ua subpages to work). Just get the text translated. That should be enough for now, and we'll do the templates etc after the language wiki is created. Equazcion (talk) 04:07, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

New rarity files

Hey, first of all, thank you very much for your support setting up the German wiki! It is mostly fixed and "ready to use" now, but I realized I would like to have the rarity level files translated. I tried making some on my own with the Andy font, but the result was not really satisfying... So I would like to ask you if you could create files with the translated names, if that does not take too long? The German names for the levels would be:

New Image For Microsoft Store (Main Page)

I know I could just add this onto the edit page, but all of the code used to construct it leaves me puzzled. The Windows icon isn't really Microsoft store, I created another version (the one that you can see in Windows 10.)

The larger one is the OS logo for Windows Phone, not the MS store logo. They were the same at one point, but apparently not anymore. Equazcion (talk) 15:08, 2 Sep 2018 (UTC)

Outdated Download Links

Heya,

I was looking at the page for Map Viewers and when I went to download TEdit, I noticed the link was outdated. It did eventually get me to the correct page, but I felt it would be much more convenient to have the correct link right there. Of course, when I went to edit the link, it was detected as potentially harmful which is totally understandable (don't want any malicious edits) but a little bit irritating. So, would you mind changing the link to reference https://github.com/TEdit/Terraria-Map-Editor/releases instead? You could also probably just remove the alternate link as it just points to the github page too, except the source code instead of the releases page which is less useful for people.

Apologies if this isn't what your talk page is supposed to be used for, it said to contact an admin and I couldn't really see any other way.

EDIT: To be more specific, the current download is basically just a huge redirect to the github page. It would be more convenient if it just linked directly to the github page instead. 92.16.137.171 15:53, 19 October 2018 (UTC)

Administrators of Polish Wiki

Hello, I'm the only active administrator of Polish Wiki of Terraria for 3 years. And there is one user which works actively and have some good ideas. I want to make him a second administrator, even as wiki guardian, but I'm not bureaucrat and there is not any active bureaucrats. Their last activity was a few years ago. I would like someone else to be an Administrator. But as Administrator I can't give him administrator rights. I would like to be able to give an administrator to appropriate and active people without constant writing to the Curse team. Could you do this for me? P.S I belong to group sysop, but this rank has probably been removed, that's why I have this rank, but it does not appear on my profile on the Polish wiki and so it shows that I have only a wiki guardian Marcino2 (talk) 19:04, 9 July 2019 (UTC)

Oxygen Not Included Wiki issues

Hi, I understand that you are barely active there, but some time ago Darkpsy3934 did a bunch of (automated?) imports of templates there. They have not completed them or something else went wrong, but I found them quite broken and spewing a bunch of red links when used, so I reverted some of his edits. Well, the most used notice templates still stay reverted so far, but {{Cleanup}}, for example broken (because {{Ambox}} was reverted). And there is a lot of strange broken things in Special:UnusedTemplates, such as {{taxonomy}} and other overly complicated templates from wikipedia. Heyo! Since the 1.4 update has released, I've taken a liking to editing the wiki. I've never edited the wiki before now, but with trial-and-error and a lot of copying and pasting, I'm able to create pretty neat things, like the Gemstone Blocks page, which I made 2 days ago :) However, I feel it would be so much easier to get exact stats and mechanics if I could read through the source code, but I've got no idea how. Hey there Icy -- glad you're getting the hang of things! If you're techie-minded, you can obtain the Terraria source code by decompiling your Terraria.exe file yourself via the free decompiler ILSpy (google it and download the Windows binary). Or you can just join the Terraria Wiki discord server: https://discord.gg/XsbE9b, as plenty of people there have the source code or can point you to someone who does. Luck page lock

Hello! I've come to talk to you for a potential lock of the "Luck" mechanic page. While I personally disagree with the mechanic, i find the griefing of the page to be absurd. This is why i request a lock to the page for at least the next coming weeks until this situation is resolved.

Edit wrongly labeled as vandalism

Hello,

I received a message while editing that told me to contact an admin for help. I'm trying to update the crate drop chances, since they are all incorrect now that 1.4 is out. I was able to successfully edit the [Ocean Crate] page, but I was blocked from editing the [Seaside Crate] page. This was the exact message I got: "Error: This action has been automatically identified as harmful, and therefore disallowed. If you believe your action was constructive, please inform an administrator of what you were trying to do. A brief description of the abuse rule which your action matched is: Size vandalism" So, I've randomly picked you out all the admins to ask for help, as the warning message instructed me to do. We ask anonymous wiki editors to limit their edits to within a certain size difference. I will discuss with the other admins if this should be changed. Update: Unfortunately, I can't make updates in smaller pieces, since that now triggers both "Size vandalism" and "Large content removal by new editors". It looks like I'm at a dead end here. The wiki code at the pastebin I linked above contains my complete edit with the correct values for 1.4, so if you or another admin want to, you could grab that and publish the edit on my behalf.

Hey, you deleted a bunch of duplicate files I uploaded and also fixed the pet page. I greatly appreciate it and have been trying to figure out how to do all this wiki stuff but I think i'm getting it. I was trying to get the name of the file right but it didn't let me change the name of the old files I uploaded so I just kept making new ones and eventually I knew I couldn't fix it so I stopped.
