Be it what it would, a jetpack would suit you nicely!

— The Steampunker

Wings are Hardmode accessories that allow the player to fly temporarily by pressing and holding the Jump key. They also provide immunity from fall damage (except when the player is affected by the Stoned debuff), rendering the Lucky Horseshoe, Obsidian Horseshoe, Featherfall Potion, etc. unnecessary. By continuing to hold the Jump key after flight time has been exhausted, the player is able to glide. Gliding fall speed can be accelerated by holding the ▼ Down key in addition. Certain Wings can also allow the player to hover at fixed heights.

Equipping Wings generally replaces jumps entirely with flight, rather than requiring a double-jump to activate. With accessories like Sandstorm in a Bottle, Fart in a Jar, etc., the player is able to double-jump and use the equipped accessory while in flight and gliding. Therefore, flight time is increased slightly. Flight is much more controlled with Wings than with Rocket Boots, Spectre Boots, etc. alone, and allow for much greater flight range. Flight time is reset when the player stands on blocks, or grabs a block with Grappling Hooks or the Climbing Claws.

There are currently 42 Wing types in total: 39 available on the PC version PC version, Console version Console version, Mobile version Mobile version, Old Chinese version Old Chinese version, tModLoader version tModLoader version, and tModLoader 1 tModLoader 1.3-Legacy version, 21 on the Old-gen console version Old-gen console version, Windows Phone version Windows Phone version, and Nintendo 3DSNintendo 3DS version version. Flight time and speed can vary by type.

Types

See Guide:Jump Height Comparison for the flight heights achievable with Wings stacked with other equipment.

Most craftable Wings are crafted at a Mythril Anvil or an Orichalcum Anvil, with 20 Souls of Flight and one or two ingredients representing their type; many of these "wing key" ingredients are special drops which can only be used to craft wings. The four Lunar wings (Solar Wings, Vortex Booster, Nebula Mantle, and Stardust Wings) are instead crafted at the Ancient Manipulator from Lunar Fragments and Luminite Bars. Wings that are not craftable can be obtained from various sources: Purchased from NPCs (one is an Angler reward), dropped by particular enemies, or developer wings found in Expert mode Treasure Bags.

All developer wings have a 5% (1:20) chance to drop from Expert mode Treasure Bags, but only from Hardmode bosses. {{#css:

  • All Wings work in Water.
  • The Fishron Wings work in water just as they do on land, with the same speed, unlike other wings.
  • You cannot equip more than one Wing at a time.
  • When one Wing type is placed in a vanity (social) slot and the other in an accessory slot, the full animation of the vanity Wings are shown, along with any lighting and particle effects. Flight speed and other functional characteristics follow those in the accessory slot.
  • Some jump-boosting accessories do stack with Wings to boost flight (see chart to the right).
  • Wings can be hidden when equipped and will be hidden while not in the air, otherwise they are always visible (except when using other equipment that adds graphics to the player's back, like the Leaf Blower or Turtle Scale Mail). They fold into a low-profile image when not used.
  • Steampunker Wings can be obtained on mobile versions, but only through hacks.
  • If Red's Wings are obtained in Xbox 360 or Wii U edition, then they will not disappear and can be used without any problems. Other developer Wings are available through hacking too, but they do not possess infinite flight. If wearing any other Wings as vanity over Red's Wings, the fast ascent becomes unavailable. It has been confirmed that it can be obtained on PS3 consoles but it's impossible to get it without hacks. It can be obtained on mobile, but not legitimately. You can only obtain them through hacks, and they will disappear if they are on your character or in a chest once you leave the world.
  • Some Mounts also grant flight ability, some with infinite flight time (all Wings provide only temporary flight).
  • You will need 300 (295 on Console) Souls of Flight in total to craft all craftable Wings, and 2 40 (1 80 on Console) to buy all purchasable Wings.
  • The Nebula Mantle will not hover on the Ps4 version, so it is not suggested to craft these wings except for vanity purposes.Verify

Tips

  • Flight time can be reset in midair by using a Hook to hit a block then release immediately after, and continue to hold the Jump Key. Or an Ice Rod can be used to lay blocks of ice to land in midair, making it possible to remain in the air indefinitely.
  • The slow-fall effect of Featherfall Potion or an Umbrella will stack with Wing glide, allowing for very long glides after flight time has been exhausted.
  • By using the Bundle of Balloons, Frog Leg, Solar Wings, Frostspark Boots, Flying Carpet, and Featherfall Potion, the player can attain a total maximum of ~1400 tiles of flight distance. More can be achieved by using the Umbrella.
  • Some Wings are particularly easy to acquire early on in Hardmode:
    • Leaf Wings require nothing more than putting the Witch Doctor in a Jungle biome and paying 1 at night.
    • Harpy Wings require a bit of luck when farming Harpies. Fortunately, Wyverns spawn at the same altitude, so when a Giant Harpy Feather drops, the odds are good that 20 Souls of Flight will already have been collected. The Giant Harpy Feather can also be collected before activating Hardmode.
    • Angel and Demon Wings require 25 of either Souls of Light or Souls of Night. The Souls can easily be acquired by staying long enough in Underground Hallow or Underground Corruption/Underground Crimson, since all enemies killed have a chance to drop the respective biome's Soul.
    • Frozen Wings require a Blizzard and a Snow biome in which to farm Ice Golems. Souls of Flight still must be collected.
    • Fairy Wings require farming the surface Hallow for Pixie Dust. It takes a lot of farming to get the 100 units needed, but the enemies are relatively easy to deal with in early Hardmode.

  • Prior to 1.3.0.1, Red's Wings would allow the wearer to fly infinitely and faster than any other Wings, if the player managed to obtain it through inventory editors.
